Sub frame connector know it alls!!

i've got a few questions about subframe connectors

1st: i read somewhere that you should measure the straightness of your car before installing SFC's.... can this be done easily or should i take it somewhere first and just get them do do everything??

2ND: are weld ins stiffer or are bolt ins stiffer???

and also i was wondering what wonder bars are, is it something that third gens came with out of the factory or are they aftermarket and where can i get them??

If the car does not have a history of gettin hit hard or the doors don't close or the body panels don't line up, then you should be OK.

The weld-in are the best, though the bolt-ins do work. You just have to keep checking their torque.

To properly put in SFC's, the car must have the suspension 'loaded', as it does when sitting on the street. You want to find a shop that has a lift that can lift the car by the wheels, much like many muffler shops have.

The 'wonderbar' or the steering box brace, was on select F-bodies. IROC's, Z28's, WS6's, GTA's were the most likly, but I don't believe every one. It is a device that goes under the front sway bar bolts. They were factory, so you can find them used, you just have to look. There are some aftermarket ones, too.

Its not the straightness of the car as much as its sitting square.... Say you put jackstands under the rear BUT let the front wheels hang.... Changes are the doors If closed when you welded the connectors in Will NEVER open again...HWich means you have to do the Bo and luke through the window...

Or if the doors were open they would NEVER close and if you adjusted the hinges the Dooj Jamb would run together...Like putting a rhombus inside of a rectangle.....LOL...sorry had to do some more geometry..LOL

I'm going to jump in on this. He mentioned "wonder bars". But WHAT are they/what do they do? How can I tell if I have them? Sorry for butting into your topic.

Wonder bars came on the 85 up IROCs. The connect the two front frame rails together to cure the problem of the steering box "peeling" away from the frame rail and also stiffens up the front end. If you have it will be right by the front sway bar, it about 10-15mm thick. You can get it from the aftermarket as GM discontinued them i think. They are a must have for anyone who enjoys the hadleing of the car. That Sub Frame and a Strut Tower Brace.

EDIT, when I weld in my SFC I will ust jack the car up and set the wheel on some block....that way it is like it sitting on the street but up high.
