First Mod?

Alright, I just got a couple hundred bucks together and I'm ready to tear into that engine. Whats the first new piece of hardware I should get for my painfully stock 305 TBI? I'm looking to keep it mild, but make it a little quicke without sacrificing any streetability.

dump the exaust, from the engine to the bumper. The stock exaust sucks a fat one. Get some headers, new cat, and a 3in single cat-back that way it will be there for all your future mods.

Yea, the best improvements I got were with the rear and exhaust. If you just wanting engine mods, then the exhaust would make a big difference.

I'll second that. Headers first though, the rest you can have a good exhaust shop do when you take the car in to have the y-pipe attached to the system. Take my word for it, only do this once, not thrice as I did. First I put in on of those SLP take off mufflers to replace my P.O.S. rusted stock one. Thaen I wanted a Flo-Master, then I did my headers and installed the BIG 4 bolt cat flange to work with my electric/pneumatic exhaust cut-out (it went in place of the cat until time for inspection), then opted for a hi-flow 3" in/out cat and a stockish muffler to keep it quiet. (I go to work at 5:00 am and I like my neighbors.) Just do it right the first time and move on to other mods. I have about $700 in my exhaust all told, it should've only been around $400. Headers made a BIG difference, cat made a little more difference.

Also get the headers for a single cat TPI car since it will have a 3" y-pipe and then go with a 3" Cat and a 3" catback all for the TPI car since manufacturers only make 2.5" stuff for the TBI cars. It will fit right in.
