custom cooling system?

i was just stitting around thinking and i was thinkin maybe i could run some hose from my fog lights into the engine bay? i lost 1 fog light and the other one doesnt work, so i was just gunna take it out and put some hose from there into the side of the engine bay to help it run cooler and let the engine get cooler fresh air. i would put little screens in there so that no unwanted junk gets in but what do you guys think? will it work? or will the cold air in the winter hurt it?

sounds like a decent idea, but I think that it would actualy raise engine temps cause by putting those hoses in your taking away some of the air flow that normaly hits the radiator now.

what if i just positioned the hoses so that they flow right onto the radiator fan? wouldnt that keep it cooler?

well you want that fresh(cool) air to go through the radiator to cool the coolant that runs through the engine. While driving above about 40 mph the air comes in the front grill and from underneith the car where it should hit the air dam (I say should because if you dont have the air damn you need to get one) at lower speeds or while sitting still the fan will kick in and pull air through the radiator.

Just blowing cold air in the engine bay wont cool anything down especaly if your robbing that cool air from the radiator. However, if you make your cooling system more effiecent so that the engine runs cooler (better radiator, different thermostat,....) you under hood temps will drop. Another way to drop the underhood temp is ceramic coating headers if you have them.

Its more important that the engine itself is cool than lowering underhood air temps. If your trying to lower that air temp so that your intake air is cooler then its much easier to get a cowl hood or cold air intake or something like that.

The idea you have is a very good one that also has been done by drag racers.

Your idea is basicly a very effective "ram air" system and we have seen gains of up .1 second at the track by doing this modification.

We use 3" dia. flex duct (easily found at Home Depot, Menards, etc.) We remove the fog lights and route the ducts from the fog light openings in the bumper (Trans AMs / GTAs) to the engine bay. and secure them to the open element air filter. A much cleaner installation can be had by using an 3" dual snorkel air box like the ones made by Air Inlet Systems.

My next mod is to make my formula hood more effective. Since the engine needs as much CFM of air as it can get I am also using a K & N pro-flo lid. I plan to make a gasket to seal the air filter lid to the hood, that way the air coming in from the hood scoop has a straight shot into the TBI

Correct. In making this system I hope you are meaning to connect it to the Intake, not the rad... This idea of your will not harm the rad at all if run properly it will work fine at getting cold, rammed air into the intake. Sounds lika great idea. I would try to install some type of filter on both hoses somewhere, other than just a sceen. Like two K&N square filter and make a box to hold them included in your hose. If it is just for drag then the screen setup will work for you.

This was my basic system just to see how things would work. I need a different hood to do it the way I want though, plus I hadn't move the battery to the back yet then either.
