Well in theory yes. The thermostat wont open unitl the coolant reaches a certain temp and the coolant will not reach the sensor until then. So your temp gaugee will be off

the temp guage runs off of a little wire underneath the exhaust manifold on the drivers side i beleive its in between the 1st plug and the 2nd plug. the wire has a fitting and it should slide right over the sensor. unplug it and your guage wont work.
