Questions on 84 camaro with crossfire injection
Hi all! I'm new around here and did a little searching but have not found a lot on the subject of Crossfire injection.. Here's a little of the story.... I came across a 84 camaro z28 with crossfire injection for a song. The question I am asking myself is I know this type of injection was made 1 year only because of problems...but I don't know what were the problemes.... too rich ...too lean.... timing problemes? Would I be asking for problemes if I buy the car or the problemes are not that bad. The more info I can get the better off I will be with my decsion making. Thanks to all in advance

I have had very little dealings with the crossfire injection. I know of one guy in this area that has a good running 355 with crossfire injection. He's a driveability mechanic at the local Chevy dealer and he claims the crossfire injection isn't as bad as most people will tell you it is. I do believe there are flow issues based on the small exit ports, hot spots, and distribution issues that can stack up on you quickly once you start increasing the power level. Here's a couple links that you might find interesting if you want to pump up the power and keep the crossfire injection.

I've used the Weiand intake they're converting on a number of budget minded 406 combinations running deep in the 12s in the heavier G-body cars.

well, they aren't nicknames "cease-fire injection" for a reason, lol, personally i wouldn't know, but if the price is right on the car go for it, you can always put a carb on it or something.

The Cross-Fire Induction (CFI) was introduced in 82.
Their main problem was the intake design. Too many sharp turns in the air flow. Low end torque however wasn't too shabby.
The throttle bodies have to be sync'ed like motorcycle carbs are sync'ed. Most people were not aware of that and their driveability suffered.
They also have 2 IACs, which presents the owner with twice the risk of an IAC problem.
The ECM was from the stone-age compared to what was avaliable even in the mid-late 80s.
Parts are getting hard to find too.
Depending on your location, the smog police may not approve of you swapping to a carb. Something to keep in mind if it's not running well with the CFI.
I've driven my (CFI) 82 Z-28 over 286K miles (over 19 years) and it's only left me stranded twice. Once for a fuel pump and once for an ign module. I'd consider it a very reliable system, but definately not high perf.

you sure its a 84? I thought that crossfire only came in 82-83 z-28s and 82-84 on vettes. I own an 83 crossfire z-28. It seems that these cars are getting rare. In the early 80s people swapped them out with carbs because the average mechanic didnt have knowledge of computers. I had plans to rip out the 305 and replace with a 350 and carb. But now ive decided to keep it as close to original as i can get her. Its not all that intricate of a set up. Very basic fuel injection system. She had been sitting in a junk yard for six years. Did a little work on her and she fired right up. Runs a little rough but im sure it will smooth out with a little driving and a head rebuild.

The biggest problem with the Crossfire is that it is plagued by negative comments from people who have never owned one or maintained one and know nothing about them. Come on over the the Crossfire Injection Vault at http://www.crossfire.homeip.net:81/cftest/default.asp and talk to the people who know the system, its limitations and how to extract good performance from it.
