89' T/A that smokes...

Hello All! I'm new here but after reading a bit maybe you can help.

Car smokes when idle and at start up. When driving smoke less noticeable or not at all. Whitish Smoke?

First thought was valve guides? When I had someone check these he said they looked very good. (car has 140,000 mi) But he was confused when he saw smoke, excessive exhaust smell ,no oil loss, and NO loss in power.

Now a new friend is telling me "sloppy fuel injectors".

89' T/A 305 TBI. No mods. Any thoughts appreciated!!

Thanks

First off, welcome to the board!!!!

You say white-ish smoke? When it's smoking, does the exhaust have a very sweet smell to it? If so, then you're burning anti-freeze and it's most likely a head gasket.

Usually, white smoke is an anti-freeze problem, black smoke is carbon (running rich) and blue smoke is oil.

Have you checked your cooliant level lately? If it's low (and you don't have any external, visual leaks) then it's most likely a head gasket.

Later,
Mike

Thanx for your reply!

I will have to check that. I have replaced radiator (Orig had plastic tanks) , heater core and have went through numerous thermostats before this (smoke) problem had started.

Although I have limited experience around engines, is this something that would require lots of experience (special tools)? And is there a way to check before replacing gaskets?

OH, the smell of smoke is what confuses everyone..."sweet" is not really how I would describe it.... but it is very "fumie" (like in a tight area would probably knock you out) LOL!!

Thanx again!

Ooops! just like to add that this white-ish smoke is thick, as in smoke bomb fill the neighborhood type.
