For, I'm sure, the 3,500th time---

Sorry, but I've read posts till my eyes are crossed.

I have a '92 RS 305TBI 5-speed. Only mods are a FlowMaster exhaust and Edelbrock open element.

I'd like to add some punch. I'm not willing or able (at this time), to go below the intake manifold with mods---that is, I don't want to fool with headers or new heads for now. A cam wouldn't be out of the question, though. Don't need any problems with hood clearance or reliability, and I want to preserve my EGR and TBI.

Leaving myself wide open to flames---I ask,

Suggestions?

Thanks!

I would start off with switching to a k&n filter first, do the ultimate tbi mods (free), afpr (free), bump timing up to 6ish, and since your not wanting to tear into the motor at this point i would probably go with some gears. 3.73's or 3.42's with an slp posi would run ya 500 to 600 dollars. That would probably be your best mod to do at this point. Theres quite abit else to do but that would be tearing into the motor to do it.

If you have the 2 1/2" or 3" catback from Flowmaster I would also look into having a new y-pipe made that was less restrictive. And maybe a new cat as well.

You are going to NEED headers if you plan on making any power with a 3rd gen NA. Headers take almost 1/2 the time of a cam install and are about 3-5 times easier (less technical/can't mess up your engine).

A cam install requires you to remove practically everything but the long block(heads, pistons, crank, etc.)

Anyways:

Headers and 3" cat (can be welded to your exsiting 3" flowmaster cat-back)
Posi and (gears) 3.73s work great with the TBI T5 ratios at the dragstrip (4th gear @ 5000 rpm = ~102 mph).
A cooler T-stat and a quality chip(not hypertech), bump timing to 6-8* if a lot timing isn't added in the chip.
Some traction stuff LCA, LCA brackets are cheap.

That should be enough to get you into the high 14s and low 90 mph range 1/4 mile times. I ran 14.7x @ 93 mph with these mods minus the traction stuff.

Unless you know someone that will do custom chips for you or do them yourself, then I wouldn't get a cam yet. Speed density (MAP sensor) cars don't like changing cams or heads without a custom chip.
