not much pickup
I have a 1990 305 LO3 TBI with a 700R4 transmission and 3.08 gears. I recently did new plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor, thinking I would get more pickup because over the years my car hasnt had as much power as when I first got it with 118,XXX miles on it. It now has 141,XXX. With the WOT the engine races and a sound like air is whistling from the side of the car comes out. Could this be my transmission? The car is shifting in the red zone, around 6K rpm, when I have it the accelerator at 3/4 depth. still no power at all. Very slow pickup. Please help.

Are you sure you dont have 2.73 gears? Anyways, You say in WOT the engine races but does it pull the car? Or does the tranny just slip. 700R4 are known to go bad, ive been though 2 on two diferent camaro's already. If its not shifting till 6K then you could be having tranny problems. Your valves in the tranny could be sticking, mine was doing the same thing before i got it rebuilt. I would get that checked out.

The tyranny doesnt slip, it pulls the car but not much, feels as if I am not moving at all. This only happens when I want to give it some gas, such as passing cars or just to give it some off a red light, the rest of the time it shifts perfectly and drives fine.

I had the same problem with my 91 rs w/a 700R4. it was the tranny. at half throttle it would pull just fine, but if i hit the gas it would crawl up. i took it to a shop and they thought something might be stuck in the valve body. i had it flushed at a shop and that seemed to do the trick. you might want to start there.

Also make sure your TV cable is adjusted properly. Most 700R4s don't like for it to be out of adjustment more than 1/8" either way. Just one more avenue to check.
