CA emissions question re: zz4 or lt1
Hello, i am in the process of puling my 305 for a refresh and to put some new heads and a cam in. I have the edelbrock tbi intake, and i am putting on some world products 305 sportsmans (the precursor to the torquers i guess, as they have no center bolt holes) The heads have just come back from the machine shop, new studs, valve springs, retainers etc. I want to either use a lt1 cam (which i already have) or the zz4 cam. My question is, will the zz4 pass smog? I have been told that the lt1 will, but that tha zz4 will require more chip tuning (which i was planning on doing) however, what are my chances of passing smog after the chip and the zz4? I know that the zz4 has been discussed before but my search didn't really answer this question. Also, will having perimeter bolt valve covers make the smog *** angry? Or do you even think he'll notice?
Thanks,
Mike

I know somebody who has vortec heads and an LT1 cam in a 305 TBi and he passed emmisions but with a vary detuned setup. He burns his own chips and leaned the thing out, left the stock air cleaner on, enabled EGR and a few other tricks. He said he passed okay but immediately went home to reburn his chip. I would think that a zz4 cam and a fantastic chip you would pass, if and only if you have a cat. I know CA is super strict and I am not sure what thier levels of acceptance are. If you have a chip just to get the car to run you will NOT pass. Even when he got his chip to where the car would run good, it ran so rich it hurt your eyes. No way that would pass. So you better have a dead nuts chip and tune or stay with a LT1 cam.
You will not regret going bigger than the LT1 cam in a 305. it really feels so good and pulls pretty hard. Easy to tune and puts a big smile on your face. Not a 12 sec set up but who cares.

There are a lot of guys in Cal. who are running a bigger cam than the ZZ4 and passing but I think they have TPI or carb. But World SR or SR torquer are 50 state legal and they have perimiter valve cover bolts... they also have a sticker with a CARB # on it. World SRs are a copy of early stock heads, SR stands for Stock Replacement. Yet it's not legal to replace parts on your motor with parts from an earlier model. ...Make sense? It's all in the CARB sticker.
