Losing Power? Help!!
Losing Power? Help!!
I bought my 1988 Camaro RS with an LO3 engine not too long ago and havent done anythign with it yet. It's still 100% stock.. or I believe it to be. I'm still learning a lot about this car. Doing a lot of research. I have a problem with my car. I gas the car and it accelerates fine under normal driving conditions. But when I puch the gas pedal pretty far down.. probably about 60% of the way down, I'll get some good power for about 3 to 4 seconds and its about to shift into the next gear (auto trans), say at about 35-40mph, the car jerks and I feel absolutely no power for about 2 seconds, even after it had shifted. It's like it's struggling to accelerate at a somewhat wide open throttle. I dunno how else to describe this problem. Mabey you guys can help me out. Sorry for the long message but It's the best way I can explain it.Whats going on!!! Help!

In my opinion, the best thing you can do is start small and assume it's do to milage on the engine, based on the fact it is completely stock. I would recommend:
Basic tune-up, i.e. plugs, wires, oil, air filter, distributor cap and rotor, and maybe tranny fluid depending on the color.
Sea Foam engine cleaner to clean out carbon build-up. The stuff works great. I don't think you need to put any in the crank case. But definetely use about 1/3 of the can and slowly empty it directly into the throttle bores while the engine is running, almost to the point of stalling it. You'll get a lot of black smoke from the exhaust more than likely. It just means it's working. Then put the other 2/3 into the gas tank, then fill the tank with gas and try to run it down before filling up again.
If this does not work, then we can start looking into other problems. But either way, doing the tune-up and Sea Foam is only going to help you.

Also, are you sure your transmission isn't slipping? If it is jerking bad, you may need to adjust detent cable. You can learn how at this link: https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/detent.shtml
So far i cganged the oil and i installed 6 of the 8 spark plugs. I quit for the day after doing six. Sure was hard as crap man. I had to go under the car for the number 5 and 7 spark plugs. . One of the spark plug wires werent even tightly on, so I was losing power there already. I took the car for a drive and oh man did I notice a power increase. I havent done the 6 and 8 spark plugs yet. Dunno how to do those. Looks like it's a jungle down there. but im planning to finish it up tomorrow. Im planning on swapping the crap air cleaner assembly for a new one. Any recommendations? Ill probably hookup a K&N air filter assembly with that Xstrem lid thing. Looks like it works pretty well. Oh, and what am i going to do with the breather and the vacuum hoses? Getting better though. Thanks for the help guys. Any more would be greatly appreciated.

A standard flat base 14"x3" w/ a K&N and you should be fine. I'm not a strong believer in the xtreme lid for our cars simply because it is so close to the hood, but I can't say it isn't benificial, because I have never tried it. As far as the breather goes, just replace it with one that sits on the valve cover. You can cap off the vacuum line for the heat stove also. As far as the IAT goes, most of the bases have a spot to drill out for it. Otherwise you can just locate it to a cooler part of the engine. Hope this helps
