No strainer in fuel tank, will this hurt?

I took out my in-tank fuel pump to run a Holley Blue pump. I used a compression fittin and about 6" of 3/8" copper line where the in-tank pump was, but now I have no way to put the strainer on. I had thought about using another compression fittin and puting a couple of brass screens in the end that is at the bottom of the tank. Do ya think this would hurt anything? I've still got the filter in the stock location. The worst thing that I see happing is just having to change the fuel filter more often, ya think?
Oh well let me know as I've got to get the tank back in the car. Im gone to a few parts stores now to see if I can find a strainer from another type of car that will fit onto 3/8" line. Thanks and please give me some input on this as the car must be back to running soon.

as long as you had a filter before the pump, id say thats ok.. theres not much chance of trash getting in there anyway....

but i do have to say... ive never done it before....... athough ive thought about doing somthing like that and making a swinging pickup so that under cornering and braking, the pickup is wherever the fuel is......*shrug*

I just got back from the parts store. I tried to get a strainer for a carb car. They say that a carb car has no strainer and that they can't get one. He told me that the strainer was only there to filter the gas before the in-tank pump. He also said that as long as I had a filter before my pump that I should be good. I kinnda beleave this, but I would like to see a picture of a carb fuel sending unit if anyone has one? Thanks

Well after looking for a few days, I condn't find a strainer to fit the 3/8" line. So I put the sending unit back in without one. The brass tube that I ran down is about an inch longer than the strainer was. It looks like it could've been even longer maybe another 2". I had heard that the 1LE's had a duel strainer that was longer, not sure though?
The only thing that worrys me is that when I coner hard while low on gas that without the strainer there it may studder/run out. I feel the strainer helps with that as well as filter the gas before the pump.
I also saw a fuel sending unit out of a '74 firebird. One of my friends nabors has one that he put a 10gal fuel cell in the trunk. He had the old tank in the back yard so we toke the sending unit out. It only had a screen on it, kinnda like a oil pump screen and pick up. Oh well, I'll let ya know how it works soon. Maybe I get the tank in this weekend. Thanks

I was about to put the tank in today when I saw this. http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...00-prmenbr=361 (If that don't work http://www.jegs.com the part# is 650-4205) It is a Fuel Tank Insert. Although its for a Rustang oh I mean Mustang(lol) it says:"If you want (or need) to add a big external pump, then you have to take out the factory in-tank pump and replace it with one of these high flow pickup tubes." They list two. One made by Mallory(which I listed the part# above),which was $117.99 and the other by Granatelli Motorsports, part# 467-GMTI7998 which was $96.99. I didn't see any for F-bodys, but I did E-mail Mallory and Granatelli to see if they carry them for F-body's. The thing was that neither had a strainer on them. So if I can't get one for the RS at least I'm starting to feel a lot better about not having a strainer.

If you don't use a tank strainer, MAKE D**N SURE you put a filter in as early in the fuel line as possible...

...and be prepared to change it OFTEN!

Its' that or death to carb!
