I just passed NJ emissions yesterday, after going twice in the same day. The first time I went, I just started it up in the morning and went straight there, my NOx was 14, which is about 100 over. The HC was 173, and the CO was .56, both of which passing. Anyway, I went home and brought my timing from +4 to -2, and went back, hot engine, and my NOx was 930, and the other two were lower also. I can't imagine 6* of timing changed it that much, so just make sure your car is real good and hot, and doesnt have residual soot in the pipes when they test it.

no, your rotor spins clockwise, so to retard the timing (delay the spark) you will need to turn the distributor clockwise. You'll know you're going the right way if the engine speed slows down initially. Don't go too far or that could also make your emissions high. I have seen emission improvements as far as -6*.
