Prestart Fuel??

Ok, I'm not sure how to explain this but I'll do my best. First of all, my car just died on me one day & I've been tracing the problem ever since. So far I've got it running but it smokes reeeaaaally bad, smells of fuel, & won't idle. Now I just noticed this today. Are the injectors suppose to spray some fuel when you turn on the key but don't start it? When I turn my key on the passenger side injector kinda sprays a decent amount of fuel out. And in one instance, it kept pouring out for about 3 seconds. Could this be a regulator problem? I don't know how to search for this problem so if it's been discussed before just let me know. Any thoughts on this would be great. Thanks

Sounds like a bad leaky injector. Check out a junkyard and pick up a couple spare injectors and try them.

Could also be caused by a short to ground on the negative switched side. This would cause the injector to say open as it would essentially be on.

Wow! Thanks for the quick replies guys.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards that. I put my stock regulator assembly back in to no avail. (I had the GM VAFPR one in)

Sounds like a possibility also. I'm an electrical idiot so any help on how to test for that would be great. I'm assuming maybe a continuity type of test to ground from a certain wire maybe? Please let me know.

Just a quick update. I'm gonna get some used injectors to see if my theory is correct on the "leaky injector" being the problem.(thanks for the parts CrazyHawaiian!) I'll let you guys know how everything goes. I'm gonna probably do it this coming weekend.
Wish me luck!

I would wager that the o ring sealing the injector in the pod is shot. TBI injectors rarely go bad themselves

o ring is new. Unless I got a bad o ring or I pinched it somehow. I'll be sure to check that when I swap them out

The Car Is Running!!!!!

Guess what guys. The injector was my problem. When I took out the old injectors I double checked all the o rings, top & bottom ones, & everything checked out fine. I then installed the injectors that I got from CrazyHawaiian. Turned the key to on, heard the fuel pump energize, & no fuel squirted out of either injector. I knew that my problems were solved right at this point. Cranked the car up & Vrooooooooomm! It started right up & purred like a kitten. I'm still smoking a lot & I'm hoping that it's from all the excess fuel that was dumping into the motor from the leaky injector just burning off.
I just wanna thank everyone for their help & opinions & once again, my thanks go out to Shawn for the injectors.

Bad news! The car is running all messed up again. After the test run I took around the block, the car started to surge at idle. I started it up the next day & it started acting strange. It fires right up & idles normal for the first 10-30 seconds. Then after that, it starts to idle a little erratic, & it also sounds like it's missing a little cause I hear popping sounds out of the exhaust almost like mini backfires.

So far I have changed the ignition module & egr valve. I also checked for any trouble codes & none come up.

When I move the car, it kinda misses & slightly backfires. Any thoughts on what would cause this? Could a faulty IAC motor do this? Any help would be great. Thanks.
