code 15 coolant temp

Hey guys.. I ran a code.. came up with the coolant temp sensor.. it also says that the way the sensor is reading now it makes the engine run rich and that it may cause drivability problems.. let me tell you what she is doing.. welll first of all i can smell gas.. the car will drive fine down the road and when i go to stop or whatever and push the clutch in the engine will rev up to 2k+.. then slightly fall back down to 1500 and kinda act like its missing.. i have an open element on it and it will make a loud hissing noise sitting at a red light and the engine revs on its own.. then comes back down and the hissing goes away.. its wild.. its like the car has a mind of its own.. and annoying.. im going to replace the coolant temp sensor and also put a new plug on it.. the original plug is missing and wires are just stuck down into the sensor with silicone around them here is a pic Can a bad coolant temp sensor cause this much problem?? i thought it would be the map sensor or the tps.. but only code that came up was 15.. any info???

That sounds about right to me. Bad or faulty coolant temp. sensors are known to cause all sorts of wierd or random problems, especially after the vehicle has warmed up. While your messing with the wiring, you might as well go ahead and check it. Just make sure that you're getting a 5 volt reference from the yellow wire and that the black wire is properly grounded with a multimeter.

You might also want to test the CTS, just to be sure. Measure the resistance between the 2 contacts in the CTS. Here's a chart:
