cooling problems

for some reason my fan only comes on if i turn the ac on , i'm pretty sure this isn't normal and i barely ever use the ac because it doesn't blow cool air wich is a whole other ordeal. during regular driving the temp stays pretty low but stop and go it tends to get warm. is this a normal problem and relatively easy to fix ?

very common problem... i had the same. i found out the easiest way to fix this is to buy an aftermarket temperature control relay. i got mine at pepboys for about 30 and youll need to go buy a fuse...but for me that fixed it...before that i replaced the fan relay, coolant temp sensor, engine temp sensor, radiator, and none of that fixed it but the aftermarket relay did.

Since the fan turns on with the AC, then you know that most of the wiring, the relay, and the fan motor is good. The problem is either the coolant fan switch or the wiring to it. This is a very common problem with these cars. The coolant fan switch is located in the passenger side cylinder head, in between the #6 and #8 spark plugs. You will probably have to get underneath the car to see it, the exhaust manifold pretty much hides it.

This is what it looks like:

You have some options on replacing it, if the wiring turns out good. You can get a stock replacement fan switch at any auto parts store, but the factory switches turn the fan on at 238*, which is practically boiling. Both Hypertech and Jet make aftermarket lower temp. fan switches through places like Summit Racing or Jegs for about $40, but you can get the same thing for $13 here, part number 609-106: http://www.madvet.com/shop?frame=1.138.944
