timing....

just read timing article

what is the situation with hearing the pops when decreasing rpm? the exhaust port shouldnt be open at that point right? i had that when i got my car back on the road and then it went away

i have the car advanced 6* and run it on 89 octane, is the computer auto retarding it or what?

heading to the strip this friday, previous best of 15.65 im takin out the passenger seat and bypassing the AIR pump in hopes of a 15.5_.

car runs better then last year, smoother lower idle, used to idle at 2000 rpm till it was real warm then 1000-1250 now it immediatly goes to 750 on startup, dunno what i did. now have newer tighter tranny in it and a timing light so i can time it at the track to get it dialed in. newer larger open element that i need to drill for the temp sensor, also freshly restored exhaust manifolds minus the air tubes. thinking about throwing my cat back on because i might be losing torque on the lowend currently my exhaust ends at the cat)

opinions ideas to hit the mid 15's?

Do you have an open element on it yet? That seems to help alot coupled with an exhaust you should love the difference. Oh yeah I don't think that bypassing the AIR pump will help at all. You can buy the open element for $20 or so and that would probably be the ticket.

did you run? I am going to run mine next saturday, it looks similar to yours, I have open element, 6* advance, and gutted cat. I dont have any poping or pinging on mine, but every car is different as Ive found out. In any case, I plan on putting 93 in the car just to make sure when I take it to the track, and also remove my spare -- that might offset the weights of the subframe connectors a bit, but otherwise stock weight.

i have run it before, best is a 15.65 aiming for 15.5_ on friday. mods include the backseat being removed, which is offset by the addition of an amp, no AIR tube on the exhaust manifolds, a/c is removed except for the pump, open element 14X2, exhaust is removed from the cat back, timing is advanced by 6* but im pulling it back to 4* for friday. cant think of anything else.

ive got a bad flatspot in my powerband at 3400 rpm as well, dunno what that's from, also somehow the cars nature has changed since last year, used to rock up to 70 and then so-so to 90 and then a struggle for 110, now it rocks to 70 and then sucks from there to 90 and then blasts from 90 to 110, at 95 mph i can tap the throttle and it has torque to rock your head back, at 70 it has none.
