53,000 miles
Hey guys.. i got a 92 RS 305 tbi 25th edition Camaro and it has 53,000 original miles..
I was just asking if I should still do a tune up on the car?
Also when i got on the highway its really slow going 70+
is it the gearing?? Because its fast in first and second.
Thanks

a tuneup definetly wouldn't hurt. as for slow on the highway do you mean slow from 70 up at wot or just cruising?
first check your base timing! Factory was 0*btdc i'd recommend 4* or so at least. Mine can get beat by a geo with 0* btdc it's now set at 10*. Most people say 6*-8* is what theres like best so you can always experiment.
Just remember the more you advance it the better the chance for pre ignition so high octane fuel is never a bad idea. I always run premium in mine because, i have the timing so far advanced.
at cruise speed you won't have much power you probably have 2.73 rears which should net you like 1475rpm at 55mph so. Even so mine very very seldomly downshifts at highway speeds.
I let my car shift at 1800 rpms cruising through town though.... The engine seems to pull plenty well from 1,500 up until about 4k on mine.
mine has 141k on it with an open element and a just mildly better flowing catback. So my guess is yes your probably ready for a tuneup or some other tweeking. Is your check engine light on? Do you have any vaccum leaks, muffler or cat starting to plug up?
On flats my car will pull to about 85mph in od without downshifting and stay at that speed fairly easy and i have almost 150k on the clock so if you can't i'd try a tuneup after checking your timing if thats no help check your copdes and check for vaccum leaks.
And if that doesn't work go buy a 383 stroker vuahahahaha

53,000 is good mileage. I would also look into a tune up. Not that mileage has anything to do with part failure but instead age. Age and weather conditions can rot vacuum lines and plug wires. A few minutes inspecting some plugs (might as well replace them, and with an Ohm meter on the plug wires will tell you the condition of your ignition. I would also check the base timing, as mentioned above, and fuel pressure. I would not go with more than 2° or 4° advance. Swirl port heads by design do not necessitate a lot of initial base timing. Going to far advanced can yield poor results.
All of these things can be checked before you even spend a dime. The fuel pressure tester can be rented from Auto Zone (actron unit).
The "slowness" you feel at 70mph could just be your interpretation of how fast you think the car should be. If all of the above maintenance issues check out fine than you are probably used to the power and wish you had more (crap cam, intake and gears don't help these cars). These cars are not top end monsters and will slowly accelerate to the limiter (112mph).
