TBI with bad fuel pump
TBI with bad fuel pump
It turns out that the source of all my idling and stalling problems is the friggin fuel pump again. I DON'T have the time or tools to drop the rear, exhaust and tank to do this job so its going to my mechanic.
This is the thing, I was told you could wire up a fuel pump to the oil pressure switch to run when the car was on, run some fuel lines to it and simply install it in the engine bay. Anybody do this before? I need suggestions on where to put it IN the bay and what model pump I should get specifically for our TBI's... if there is such a pump.. otherwise I'd have to get an AFPR along with it. I need some suggestions - good or bad...

Totalled it but saved a bunch of parts before it went to the junk yard.

Well, I will tell you I had the same problem accept I have a locking gas cap that put too much back pressure on my pump and completely took it out. Well, I have NEVER done ANYTHING like it before, but I was determined to do it myself as I didn't have the 500 bucks to have the mechanic do it. It took my unskilled self 5 hours to do the entire job and I learned a lot about my car in the process. I had, at the time, one of those cheap Taiwan made 119 piece tool kit and a few borrowed tools from AutoZone. It is really a lot easier than it looks. A Haynes manual will help and now I could get up under my car and do it in about an hour or two if I really wanted to. It is also a good time to get some suspension products put on as you have to take them out. Remember to DRAIN that tank. If you have any further questions please let me know.

Well, my mechanic is probably one of the only honest mechanics out there and gives an extremely fair price for his work (we've actually tried stuffing MORE money in his hand). The last time he did this job for me it was $212 and should be less this time since I already have the pump. Being a full time student, I don't have the time for this big job... and with me, the first time I perform a job, it usually takes a real long time (and I don't own any useful power tools). I would agree on upgrading some of the suspension components while I'm at it but unfortunately I'm relatively BROKE
.. oh well... still looking for suggestions before the car goes tomorrow morning. Thanks

I agree that it is problably not that difficult and you do not need any special tools to replace the fuel pump. Just be careful since you are working around gasoline. For what its worth, I paid a mechanic to replace mine and it only cost me $200.
