Guys need your help plz, car cranks but will not run
I have A 92 RS with the 305 TBI engine and has 72000 miles on it. It ran fine on Sun. but it sat there for the rest of Mon. When I went to crank it up in the morning it just wouldn't fire up. I think it is pooring too much fuel into the system because you can smell gas fumes coming from the exhaust pipes while cranking it. My fuel pump is working because you can hear it prime the system when turning the ignition key on. The spark plugs, cap, & rotor have been changed about 3 to 5000 miles ago. On a side note the car has had a rough idle(500 to 800 rpms)for the past couple of months.
Would an electric drill being used near the ECM mess it up? Because I drilled a hole for my amp wire and I know the drill was very close to the ECM while I used it. I checked to make sure I didn't gouge the harness and I didn't so what else could it be? I Live in NC and we have been getting some pretty cold weather here lately and it was down to 17 degrees that morning, would this have anything to do with it?
Thank You

Hmm, could be several things. The most common cause of a crank and no start in these cars is the ignition module. It is located underneath the distributor cap. It is the module the wires plug into. Should be easy for you to change, if that is the problem. If not, check your ignition coil. Easiest way is to use an ohm meter across the high an low side. If it shows "infinite" resistance, you need a new coil.
A timing light can come in very handy here. When fast with a no start, place the timing light pickup on the coil wire. If it does not stobe, you know the problem is before the coil (I.E: control module) And if it strobes, then it is most likley a fuel related problem. Pop the air cleaner lid and have someone crank it while you watch for injector spray. But my money is on the conrtol module. I know this is your first post here, so please stick around for a bit and learn a thing or two, and pass on a thing or two as well. Good luck, let me know what it was.

I've been having similar trouble and I changed my ignition module today. No luck. I've changed the IAC valve, MAP sensor, Thermostat, and had the coil and pick-up tested. My ECM isn't throwing any codes either. It seems that my car has spark but is not igniting; in fact, i believe it's flooding. Tomorrow I am going to check out the TPS. It does have 5Volts running to it though. I dunno. Good luck with the trouble.

I had the same problem one winter but I didn't smell gas or anything. It would crank but no start. I had spark and everything but I noticed the spark at the coil was not that strong. Anyways, all I did was put a battery charger on it for 1 night and the next morning I went to start it and worked like a charm. To this day I have no clue what happened but apparently it needed a jump I guess. Funny thing was the battery was fine, I just did it because I thought from all that trying to start the car ran it down a bit that day. Oh well. Hey try that! I am sure ur willing to try anything right about now.

turn your car to the on position and look to see if the ses light comes on. if it doesn't you should look at the ecm. i had a 84 fiero that had the same problem a faulty coil burned up the ecm and the car smelled like gas and wouldn't start
Thank you guys for replying to my post. I replaced the control module today and no luck
. It still doesn't want to fire up. I had a friend stand there and watch the injectors for fuel spray and it was in a conical form. When I took the Distributor cap off it had carbon tracks on the terminals and it had a white color on them. Also the rotor had black carbon on the top of it. How can this be if I replaced these items only a few thouand miles ago? Is this what could be causing the problem? The plug wires I believe are the original ones with 72000 miles on them. I disconnected the #1 plug wire and stuck a spark plug in it and it sparked. So now I don't know what to think. I did notice that while cranking the engine over with the spark plug exposed it seem to take awhile between sparks. And when I first turn the ignition key to the on position the SES light is on so my ecm must be good. I hooked up a snap-on scanner and there were no codes. I'm lost here....
I appreciate it guys and I will be looking here again for any more input.
thanks

What about the coolant temperature sensor (CTS). It's located to the left of the thermostat housing in the intake manifold. Pull the connector wire off and inspect it. When I did that I noticed mine was corroded with rust. This turned out to be the problem with my car. It's running great now.
