a 383TBI is a terrible thing to waste

To the moderators: This is an exhaust question, but before you move the topic to exhaust, please understand that this has to do with my 383TBI swap and it's well being.
On every website I look at, the Hooker competition headers I find for my 88IROC have 1 5/8 primaries (for 283-400 cid engines). I have a 383 so this falls at the high end up the range. Now, SUPER comp headers have 1 3/4 but they are so much more expensive. Here's my question: ARE 1 5/8" PRIMARIES ADEQUATE FOR A 383 STREETCAR, NO DRAGSTRIP OR CIRCLE TRACK.
Thanks and let me just say that this 3rd gen website is priceless. So many people in need of info GET IT.

I think you should save up for 1-3/4 SLPs or get the 1-3/4 Hookers. I was looking at the exaust ports on my 1-5/8 and don't think I would want them on a 350+ sized engine.

Speedlvr,
IMO, "good" 1-5/8" headers would actually better for a low-rpm street version of the torquey 383. If your cam is less than or equal to 214deg intake duration and you don't plan on going over 5000 much, you will be fine with the 1-5/8" header tubes. Just make sure you have NICE clean exhaust and matched intake, like PERFORMER 'ish...

FAST,
I'm going to have true 2.5" dual exhaust made for the headers. Tell me if I'm wrong in my calculation here:
In comparing two shorty headers of the same tube length, one header has 1 5/8" and the other has 1 3/4" primaries, when you add all 8 tubes of the headers together, the over all difference is 8/8ths (1 inch). Which if true, is not enough of a difference to pay a couple hundred dollars more for unless you intend on competing in races, etc... My ride will be more for stoplight to stoplight fun. Thanks for your input.

Again, you'll be fine with that setup if you have a mellow cam and arenot looking for absolute HP above 5 grand, as I said. 2.5 true duals (should use a crossover, too) is plenty for your setup.
What cam/heads/CR/intake you running?
