Reconditioning Throttle Body....(Redo w/ 454 unit instead?)
Reconditioning Throttle Body....(Redo w/ 454 unit instead?)
Hello,
Before I install the my TBI engine into my Volvo I would like to make sure that everything is in perfect shape...especially fuel system components. But then that makes me think why not improve as well as recondition? I want to rebuild the throttle body first of all (Do they make a kit for this?), but I hear alot about using 454 throttle bodies. What can this do for me, and will they bolt to the guts of my 305's throttle body?
Thanks,
Matthew C. Hall

Depends on the intake. Keep in mind that the 454 is 2" bore compared to the stock 1 11/16". If it's a 305 with under 275hp then you won't need a 454 TB. When you use a larger engine 350+ and 300+hp then you'll want a larger unit. The smaller unit can actually make your car faster if it's a stock 305. The rule is to have the min. amount of cfm so throttle response is instant.

Jon,
I follow what you're saying, but where do I want to minimize airflow? I was planning on installing the L69 dual snorkle air cleaner to maximize flow, so should I be looking for a smaller throttle body? If so where can I find one?
Thanks,
Matt

you can find em on ebay for under 50 bucks everyday.
i have a few of em if you cant find one.
smaller is better for stock engine under 280 horse. 454 goes to ~380hp.
with the 454 on a 305, you will like your high end response better. i enjoyed having my 454. i have the little tbi back on the 305 and am begining to hate it compared to the 454. and im stock. so do either. i say really either works. i prefer 454 on the 305. even if the little tbi gives better jump from idle. the 454 felt better everywhere else.

Well, let's put it this way...The Volvo that this engine is going into has 4.11 rear gears because the 4 cylinder that was in it had very little bottom end torque. I won't have any problems with low end power it seems, so would this be a good reason to go for the 454 throttle body? Also, what does the conversion entail? Do I just take all of the guts from my 305 throttle body and bolt them onto the 454?
Thanks,
Matt

ya. but actually. if you already have the 305, just use it.
the gains are so minimal without other mods including chip changes that its just worth it for you to go out and get a new tbi. if you do though.
ya, just swap pods over, and youll probably have to fabricate some sort of linkage.
i thought you had the 454 and were debating finding a 305 tbi unit. whoops. 454 units are hella expensive, the 305/350 units are cheap
