Fuel Pump UGH!!!
OK OK here we go again, I guess the timing is right but I still had problems. Well its looking like me Fuel pump may be bad. When you hit the gas it dies....It will also backfire....amd my fuel pressure gage showes about 9 to 12 PSI and sometimes it will not pump up the gage.
#2 if the pump is bad can I install an inline pump and disconnect the in tank one and let the fuel pull through or do I have top drop the tank and do the dirty...
Thanks so much
Brian

Brian, I dont think your fuel pump is bad. When the Fuel pump went out in the 88 Trans AM that Terris dad had it didn't act anything like yours does. Plus you are getting plenty of fuel at the INjectors, and you said the guage was bad.
Are you sure the Timing is set right? Are you positive you don't have a bad chip? Are you sure The ECM is OK?
When the fuel pump went out in the Trans AM it would have trouble Ideling and sometimes wouldn't start. Ofcourse this was on a TPi system, but I woul think the symptoms would be the same. Though if you could keep the RPMS up for somereason it would run. Go figure. I would sudject getting a different guage and testing it to make sure.
As for disconecting your in tank and instlling an inline, my thought is no. I might be wrong but here is my thinking. The pump in the tank pums the fuel out and pushes it to the motor, though if its not pumping it seems like it would restrict the flow very badly and nomatter what kind of pump you put outside of the tank it would not be able to get the fuel to pump because the old pump is blocking the fuel flow. Now you could take the old one out and put an inline in close to the tank. You have to have you pump close to the tank because electric fuel pupms push better than they pull.
Maybe you fuel filter or sock on the pump is cloged. I would chec your fuel filter first, if it fine and you really think its the Fuel pump then I would say the next step is to drop the tank.
I know it is a lot of work, but I have time after today to spend as much time on it as you would like, as Long as I can do my laundry at your house!
I mean we already had the rear end out once right how hard can it be to do again? Though we will have to figure out away to drain the old gas out of the car.
Here is another thought I just came up with? What if the gas in the tank has went bad from stting for so long? The computer would be seeing a lot of knock and retarding the timing back to where tha car would barely run. DO you think this is why we had to advance the timing so far the first time we put the distributor in? Something to consider. I will give you a call later tonight.
