02 sensor

would moving the o2 sensor down to where the 2 pipes connect help performance and the engine running better or would it not heat up enough down there?

Moving O-Sensor away from the engine may effect EFI performance in several ways.

If you have a conventional single wire NBO it may take longer for it to warm up to operating temperature! Remember that O-sensor must be around 600F for it to be fully functional. Moving NBO further down exhaust stream may result in initial lean condition once CTS reports above 70C for CL operation. This can be easily dealt with by replacing a single wire NBO with a three or four fire NBO.

Placing NBO at the Y is ok as far as monitoring both banks go, so it should not hurt performance. However lower placement may subject NBO to road splash, etc.

Re: 02 sensor

I don't think it would make a difference, you are not moving it to far from the stock location.

As for the heat, to the best of my knowledge the o2 sensor mearsures the oxygen in the exhaust not the temp. I don't know why it has to be a certain temp to work properly.
And why are you putting it there?

True, but for NBO to generate signal it must be heated to about 600F

Re: 02 sensor

What I've run into with the O2 after the Y join is rain cooling off the sensor. The fuel mileage goes into the bucket and from time to time get an O2 malfunction code set. This is with both heated and 1-wire NB sensors.

The one vehicle I swapped off the drivers side manifold for the stock '85 f-body manifold. Then used a 1-wire O2 sensor. Runs great.

On the other vehicle the plan is to weld an O2 bung further up the Y pipe (closer to engine). Then move the sensor to that location.

RBob.
