I bought this t-5 from a guy which was on a 88' 305 TBI motor, THe lettereing on the tranny is their but all it says is 88 and Borg Warner Automotives, and some numbers, Did Chevrolet give World Class T-5 on TBI motors?? or where they only on TPI's.

 

there was an older and a newer T-5 for thirdgens. I don't remember which one was which and what the transition year was. Check the FAQ. The gear ratios on the later TPIs were better than the TBI t-5. It should be the same brand though. I think just 4th or 5th gear is different.

You can tell the difference between the WC-T5 and non-WC easily (if it is out of the car). The non-WC has a round plain cover just above the output shaft. It also has a short plastic breather where the tailshaft casting mates to the body of the tranny. A WC-T5 has a machined cover that is stamped with some numbers and lettering and a plastic fitting connected to a roughly 12" long black plastic tube for a breather. Your 88 should have a World Class tranny. Unless someone swapped it (like on my 88 Iroc). The RS T5 has a better first gear ratio to help launch you off the line, to compensate for the 3.08 ratio rear end.

well it says 88 on it, and from the points u guys made i still cant figure out if its a WC or not, As i took it apart to clean it up and paint it i notice the fork 2 metal pieces which hold the pivot point thing is messed up at least one is cracked and broken, So im guessing i gotta buy a new Fork, How much do they go for from GM, Finding a Fork for a t-5 in the junkyard is a joke, What about Lakewoods Fork from Summit or Jeggs are they any good. The stock fork on the 88' T-5 says on it

The trans should have a metal tag on a housing bolt with the i.d. number on it. The i.d.# for the trans you are refering to is 1352-176 2.95 1st gear .63 5th. One way to tell for sure if it's world class or not is to look at the front countershaft bearing from the outside and if it has a Timken name on it. If it's not world class it will say Torrington.
