Cheap Open Element for LO3

So ive been looking for an aircleaner to put on my Lo3, i bought a cheapo spectre one from shucks went to put it on, and the distributor was in the way. Any one have a recomendation for aircleaner that will fit, the name and or part#. Also, I heard that swapping L05 injectors from a truck will give my L03 more power, i told the dude that ive never heard of anyone adding those injectors to their motors, unless they swap to a 350. any replies will be most appreciated thx.

Re: Cheap Open Element for LO3

If this is on an engine like my Caprice that has the air cleaner with the "squared off front", here's the cheapest way to go "fully open" (on this air cleaner a square air filter sits behind the square front snap on housing).

First take out the complete snorkel and resonator assembly on the drivers side. Then also pop out from the front part of the air cleaner housing the square transition piece that the tubing connected to, this opens it up even more. Next cut a square hole around the same size as the opening you just exposed on the passenger side of the front housing. If you want even more flow, take the front housing off and use a hole saw to cut a series of holes in the front of the housing.

Now you have only the air filter itself limiting the incoming air flow, and the stock air filter has a reasonable surface area, so if you keep it clean the flow will be pretty good, probably as good as an aftermarket air cleaner. Your IAT sensor is still intact and will work fine with this method.

You also need to block off the heat riser flange that you exposed when you took that tube out with the snorkel so it doesn't output hot air.

One more thing you need to do though is as is shown in some other posts these air cleaner assemblies have a metal support ring that sits right over the TB that for some dumb reason blocks off the air flow somewhat. You need to take this ring out and "customize it" with a handsaw or grinder to not restrict the airflow, if you poke around the forum you should find some "before and after" examples of the ring mod.

go to kragen/shucks/autozone/pepboys and check out what they have. IIRC you need a non-drop base setup. The employees might let you see if an air cleaner fits before you buy it.

There's no reason to change the injectors out, your stockers are fine for a stock engine. Drowning it in fuel won't do you any good.

If you're looking for ghettoriffic/******* cheap, you can take a cutoff wheel and knock the sides off of your current air cleaner, wash the metal derbis off and put it back on. I'd be more tempted to do a home made dual snorkel though, while it's more work you won't draw in as much hot air from the engine bay and retain thermac functionality which is nice in colder climates and cold starts for efficiency.
