Question 305 TBI tuning

Hello.

My name is Jan. Sorry for my bad english. Iīm from germany !

I have an 88īPontiac Firebird TransAm V8 5.0 TBI. The engine type is L03.
In the winter 2006/2007, i built a Knight Rider exterior replica without turbo cast rims and without the cowl induction hood. See my Video:

My engine is stock. I have just headers and an 2,5 inch exhaust system without kat and with Flowmaster 80 series muffler. The sound is very nice.
Now, I need more power. But I donīt want to change the engine to another engine. I want to make my engine to more power.

How many more horsepower will I get with:

- Vortec performance camshaft. This camshaft is like the Edelbrock 3702 cam.

- Edelbrock 3704 performance intake manifold

- a performance chip

- z28 performance valve springs

Thank you very much.

What is the easiest and the best way to get more power on the 305 engine ?

Thank you very much !

Re: Question 305 TBI tuning

I would probably recomend a lt1 or lt4 camshaft instead of the one you are choosin. Just do to tunability and more modern cam profile. I would say that with a good cam and manifold you could pick up about 25-40 hp max. You may pick up a little more with a good tune in the chip though. I would suggest going the do it yourself route with the chip. Its pretty easy once you get the hang of it and the equipment is cheaper than purchasing a custome chip from someone. I would try that first and once you get the hang of it go to your new cam and intake and Have fun. Just my thoughts. Hope this helps

Re: Question 305 TBI tuning

That cam profile kinda sucks for power. Its real close to the stock cam already in there. The engine will get pooped by around 4000 RPM. Something with around 204-218 degrees of duration at the intake would be better. Stick to the low end if you have stock gears. Higher if you plan on a better torque converter and 3.73s and posi. If you wont be recalibrating the prom, then leave the stock cam, heads, and intake in place. Once you start touching that stuff, then the calibration is off and the car will perform poorly.

As far as the cams go, the 2209 would be a good choice for mild street performance if you like edelbrock. Be advised, though, that cams similar to this have a fair ammount of overlap. If you where to do lots of mods and use a similar cam, the motor wouldnt even start with the stock ECM and tune, let alone run. I switched over to a cam with enough overlap to lope, and it required a recalibration of the idle as well as idling in open loop to prevent a false rich condition from the excess O2. Even with the old cam, my vortec wouldnt even run with the stock ECM and tune. If you dont want to get real serious, stick with the LT1 cam. Its a stock EFI cam, which means that its ECM friendly and requires only modest tuning.

In addition, a 2.5" exhaust may not cut it. You should upgrade to a full 3" exhaust. Same with the stock TBI. You should try to get a bored TBI or a BBC TBI with 2" bores and a good intake. Youll be pulling serious vacuum through the stock TBI with mods to the motor.

Re: Question 305 TBI tuning

Iīm interested in the vortec camshaft because I can get it very cheaply. I can buy it from TBIchips.com. The man said, the cam is very nice for roller engines and I can get the z28 valve springs from him for 26$. The cam costs 80$. I think, itīs a very good price for these things. In germany, performance parts for gm engines are very expensive, only stock parts are cheap. TBIchips.com can also make a performance chip who works with this camshaft. What do you think ?

I also thinked on a LT1 camshaft before. But there a differences between the LT1-camshaft and i donīt know which ich need...

Iīm afraid, that the idle isnīt good with another camshaft !! I donīt want to have an idle with 1200 rpm.
Now, I have an idle with 550-600 rpm. Is this a problem with a new camshaft ?

Thank you...
