Distributor noise

I have a 305 TBI. The distributor makes a wirring/squeaking/grinding noise.

I took the cap off and I can pull up and down on the rotor alot!.. Maybe 1/4 inch or more. I hear the gear pop in and out of the Oil pump drive too. the rotor moves side to side a few degrees too.

The car still runs smooth, Just this noise is horrible. Of course I stopped using it.

What failed the Distributor? Are those Cardone Distributors any good, Or should I find a used one and try to take mine down for a rebuild.

I didnt want to take it out because the weather is getting pretty bad here. I hope I dont find disconnected gear or something.

LMK.. Thanks so much.

Re: Distributor noise

IDK too much, so I cant really help with your problem.

However, I have the Autozone Dizzy, remanufactured be Cardone it said on the sticker. It has been working great for me for months now, and dropped right in perfect.
