so i have a 1988 firebird formula tbi (as you can tell from the name) anyway i got the car a little over a year ago.. the motor tranny and rearend are all rebuilt.. never had a problem with the car except a little cooling issue when my thermostat went bad.. but now it is hesitating very badly if i hit the gas too hard and it will cut out then cut back on.. and at idle the tach will jump between 1000 and 2000 rpms.. but the motor will idle smooth most of the time at idle...

we did find out i had a bad injector and changed that which helped(a LITTLE).. and we changed the fuel filter.. im thinking maybe i should try a throttle position sensor or is my timing off?

 

3 things that aren't really monitored by the ecm (if no codes. you did check for codes didn't you?)are the fuel pressure, the cap,rotor, plugs and wires. my bet is a vacuum leak. a vacuum gauge, and a fuel pressure gauge would really help. .

i would say the fule pumps on the way out so 1st test would be fule press

you can rent a test gauge for most auto stores. for free...

it could aslo be the cap/rot arking wire, a good way to fint that out is look at night time you see the wire sparking. keep us updated if you still cant find the prob you can PM me
