Fuel system or trans. problem??

I recently purchased a used crate 305 TBI and 700r4 for my '91 RS. I got it installed and running last weekend. When I rev the engine with it in park it hesitates and doesn't have the quick snap in the throttle that I am use to with a carbureted engine. When I put the car in gear it will roll fine at idle, but when I hit the gas the engine will hesitate and sputter, and even die if I push the gas too fast. Any ideas? I'm having trouble with the VSS and getting my speedo to work. I was told that the VSS could cause to torque converter lock up to malfunction. I also believe that there may be a problem with the fuel system. I have replaced the fuel filter, but that's it. Trans or fuel problem? Thanks!

Re: Fuel system or trans. problem??

Anytime you take on a used engine you need to check everything on it and replace anything that needs it, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, and carefully check your wiring to your coil. Disconnect the connectors to the distributor and look for corrosion there on the pins.

While you have the cap off the distributor, look for corrosion of the reluctor and pickup coil. These often corrode somewhat, but if its flaking off it can be the problem.

Your symptoms could be a fuel pressure issue, check your pressure at the TBI unit, should be close to 12 lbs. Check your injector spray pattern at idle, there are some posts and videos on here showing that. If the injectors are dribbling or not spraying well you can have them cleaned and tested at www.witchhunter.com .

Check your timing, keep in mind this has to be done with the wire to the ESC disconnected, typically brown/purple, I'm not sure where it is on your car but a search here should find that info. Retarded timing can also give your symptoms, if you set it without disconnecting the wire mentioned above it will be too retarded.

I replaced the cap, rotor, plugs and wires. I will take a closer look at the coil. The car it set at 6 degrees timing. Someone said set it at 0 degrees. I will do both of these things and see what happens. Thanks!

I'd check fuel pressure next. You're checking the timing with the timing wire (usually brown) disconnected, correct?

Re: Fuel system or trans. problem??

like they said about, start with 0* timing. thats what the ECM wants. the bypass wire is tan/blk, and its located near the AC box.

as for the trans, i don't think there is anyway for the converter to lock in first gear. as far as i know, it must be in at least 2nd gear to lockup the converter.
