Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

i like my "RS"
i suppose at this point its an RS in name only

the Lo3 falls short of the lb9 in the fact that is cam is tiny and the tbi mainfold sucks best i could get out of the tbi was 16.4 that was with 3.23 gears and posi was running 16.9 before that with 1 wheel peel and 2.73s

going from my lo3 tbi just a tpi conversion did help went from 16.4 to 15.9 tpi harness and ecm swap
and just driving around felt better fuel mileage went up a bit
when i had my added headers full exhaust and 1.6 roller rockers and underdrive pulleys best i could get was 15.4
it ran about the same as a freinds car that has a lt1 cam and tuned computer with headers

also ran about the same as another freinds 89 iroc with peanut cammed lb9 but his car was stock

both thouse cars made me think it must be the heads holding the car back as even with an lt1 cam a tbi is only as fast as the same engine with a smaller cam and tpi

but now that i have a real lb9 in there
its no compairsion havent got to the track yet but im blowing my lt1 wagon away and it runs a 14.6 before the wagon sadly would smoke my camaro

all in all the heads suck the cam sucks the tbi intake sucks the tbi exhaust sucks
thats the reason people say oh its just an RS

when i 1st got this tbi car my 3.1 v6 was much faster and handled much better overall just didnt have v8 sound
but this tbi car was rust free car rare for ohio

even my girlfreinds 1st comment about the car when we where on the test drive was
"oh i thought this was a v8 wheres the power , do i need to push a button or something"

Well I am sure those who make fun of an RS have not driven one with the police package. My dad almost got me one for my high school graduation back in 1992. What killed it for me was during the test drive, I floored it and scared the salesman and my dad. Oh well.

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

thats because an RS with the b4c package is a z28 with rs logos
pretty much what my current set has me at

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

well, I own an RS, and the "Realy Slow" joke fits it, (unless it's a B4C which mine isn't.) mine shouldn't be slow for long, but it will always be an RS, I'm not into cloning cars, I'd rather have a car thats fast than one that looks like it's supposed to be fast.

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

My 87 RS is a V6 automatic car, so that's MUCH worse than you TBI 305 guys. Well was last week... it's got no engine/ transmission right now. I have a 92 L98 all set to go in this weekend. It's staying a stock RS visually, with the exception of the wheels. It's going to have Weld Pro Stars.. I don't know if the stock 15" wheels would fit on the PBR rear brakes.

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

"its only an rs" "awww cute rs"

If I had a dollar for everytime someone has said that to me...I would be freaking rich right now. Now if I had a picture of the ****** face after I started my car 2 weeks ago....we would all die laughing at him and his puny mustang. Everyone here thinks that just because it has an RS badge that its instantly a v6. O well just more fun for me when they get beat by this "RS" and listen to them cry afterwards about "thats not a v6, wtf!"

Seems 3 inch true duals with glasspacks seems to change people's opinion of your car. and scares srt4s into curbs <<;;

RS's fall short of Z28's, obviously, but most of RS's I see are 305's, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but that LO3 is very similar to the LB9 and L69 305 Iroc-z motor (bottom end), the only big difference is the fuel system. Heads? Cam? What's different other than that?

So if you could convert a TBI to TPI, you could almost consider it an Iroc-z engine...?

That doesn't seem like much to laugh about.

So what sets the two motors apart?
Some people will find anything to get under your skin. They might say stuff if you had an IROC or Z28. A few years back I was building a '69 GTO and guys would bust on my car. Same thing happened when I had my '79 T/A. ----You could build a 383 w/ all the goods and change your badges to RSA for "Really Stomp'n A**."

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

Ive got a 90 rs automatic and i have a friend who recently bought a 86 trans am that came with a 305tpi, he says it has a 350 corvette engine punched out 30 over Ive raced him up a couple hills and it only seems slightly faster then mine, plus his car dies at idle, i was wondering is it more likely that he doesn't have a 350 much less a 355 and if he does that it's running a 305 computer and thats why it doesn't idle properly and is sluggish, also it doesn't have centerbolt heads, what do you think?

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

****, folks around here are scared of my little "RS", there are no jokes to be said about it in Houston, they know the whole "Its just a 350 bored .030 over with a cam and stock ported heads" is played out by now, the car is primered and that means the money isnt in the paint.

Now my new RS, it is a turd, a joke to me actually, but it is a 5 speed like my original RS is/was(t56), and if someone wants to crack a joke about it, i will simply ask them if they want to line them up with my "other" RS.

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

Not much RS about my RS anymore... but even when tehre was, it may not have been the quickest car around, but it was a joy to drive. Great gas mileage, great off idle torque. Very pleasant cruiser car and it sounded great to boot. Shifted fine, didnt burn much if any oil. These RS'es just didnt get beat on as much as the L98/LB9 cars did. There's just not as much stress going through the driveline and it's a lot harder to break anything. It can still be done, I've seen my fair share of smoking, beaten RS'es cruising around... But in a lot of cases I think the average RS is gonna be in better shape than teh average Z. But it just depends. Mine ran great at 190,000 miles. It did everything I needed it to do.

Now I got all my high performance hot rod parts on it... and something else is breaking everyday...

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

i like having a RS,for one i think they look better..i think the z28 is little overdone and not fan of the fake hood blisters.

my RS was running high 15s before i started modding it,now it should be into the 14s,maybe even cut mid 14 with some good tires.

but it reallly doesnt matter what kind of 3rd gen u have, they all get hated on.

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

i have a 91 rs and i think its slow mainly to the such low end gears and the stock automatic transmission if i put a shift kit in and some 4.11 gears my car would be really fast i think it would be funny to keep the 305 and high perf it up a bit cam it maybe put some 2.02 heads on it im 16 and drive this car to school and i get alot of crap for it mainly i think every ones jealous that there first car wasn't a camaro they say things like my 4 cylender vw can beat your car it gets rly anoying

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

I loved my 305 TBI Formula and my 91 305 TBI RS. The easist thirdgen engines to work on I ever had.

Re: "IT'S ONLY AN RS..."

This thread makes me think of my buddy's car.

Not a third gen, but he has a 02 Mustang GT - although he has v6 16" Alloy Premium rims - a V6 rear bumper. He has a custom exhaust that isn't loud at all at idle/light acceleration but under hard acceleration it screams. The exhaust pipes are custom where one is a turn down on the driver side right below the bumper just like the single stock exhaust on a v6 and the other exhaust is a turn down before the axle to hide it more.

All the badges are just standard horse emblems like the v6. He also remove the hood scoop. It's essentially full bolt ons with a 93 octane tune and a couple other things. I'm not sure of its exact horsepower ratings but it runs mid 12's at the 1/4

He has shitloads of fun messing with people - he's always making people go wtf. He has had people ask him if it's just a built v6.

It's pretty damn fun to do things like that
