Fuel Starvation?

Hello,

I've a 89 RS 305 TBI.
I have replaced the fuel pump (in the tank of course) less than 300 miles ago (approx 2yrs ago)
The other day, I got on it pretty hard and then and it seemed a bit sluggish but didn't think much of it, parked it in the garage with no problem. Seemed to perform as always under normal driving conditions.
The next day tried to start it and would barely run, gap idling and appears that the injectors aren't getting sufficient fuel.
Same symptoms as before I changed the fuel pump.

I understand fuel pump should supply 12 - 18 PSI at the injectors?

Also, if the new pump is bad, does anyone know of an aftermarket in-line pump that would replace the in-tank pump so I wouldn't have to take the car apart to change out the fuel pump? What was GM thinking???

Thanks for any help!!
Chris

Re: Fuel Starvation?

You can put an inline it, but it will burn out faster or give you the same problems you have now. That is because it has to pull fuel past the dead pump in the tank.
Check the fuel pressure and see what it is at.

Re: Fuel Starvation?

The service spec for TBI fuel pressure is 9 to 13 psi. Can be checked at the feed line to the TBI, either at the TBI or at the flex line that jumps from the frame to the engine (the larger of the two lines).

If I put an in-line on it. I will remove the dead in-tank pump and replace it with a pickup line...
