92 RS in need of help
92 RS in need of help
Hello all,
Here's the skinny; I have a sbc 350 I had rebuilt with intentions on putting it in a 78 chevy 4x4. Lets just say the 4x4 is kinda toastie now! Long story. Anyway, I bought a 92 RS with a smokin 305 and a slipping 700r4, what I would like to do is put the 350 in it and convert it to a 5 speed at the same time. I have done a lot of reading on the tranny conversion and the 350 conversion, I know the preferred is the vortec heads but since I already paid to have these re-worked, I would like to use these if possible.
Here is my question; can I use the heads I have on the motor now instead and still get decent performance? (they are off of a 72 350 truck motor) I'm just looking for a good street performer. I know I would have to take care of the 4 center bolt issues but that shouldn't be a problem. I'm new to the tbi stuff, always ran holleys on everything before. If this combo will work, what would be the best flat tappet cam choice?
I know I would have to bump the fuel pressure using the TPI pump and do a WHOLE LOT of reading on programming the chip but I definately want to try it.
My next question is the tranny. What can the 5 speed come from? (Just a camaro, Just a v8, or can it be from a v6 if I don't beat it to death)
Will I need a new cross member or will the 700r4 member work? Will the drive shaft remain or does the 5 speed have a different length?
I appreciate any help you guy can provide, i'm trying to figure all this out before I even start.
