just bought a 89 rs
this is not a repost I was in the general info thread and got a suggestion to come here and ask that maybe I could get some more help so here goes.
I just bought a 89 rs t-top auto HO305v8 and ddon't know anything about the car the previous owner said that tranny would not get 3rd and over d.
He said that the motor would start but needed a battery I got it home and stuck a battery in and tried to start but nothing. the starter turns and the motor turns but will not crank and there's a switch on dash that seems to work the fuel pump when I flip it you can hear the pump kick and prime
I don't want my wife to think that I just wasted $600 on the body so please
help!!!!!!!!!
the body has two dents one I can get out myself the head liner needs some love and the drivers seat needs to be reupholstered or replaced. and a radio. everything under the hood is stock. A guy said he had a stock tranny from a old skool caprice for $350 is this a good deal. to be honest I want a 350v8 and beefed up to about 345hp w/ auto tranny but don't have the money for the swap right now. some one help I have more time than money right now.

My car had the same problem until i found out it was the injectors have you checked if they spray fuel

Spray a little starting fluid down the throat of the TB and see if it fires. If it does, even if just briefly, you know the ignition, valvetrain, etc. is OK and you're just down to a fueling/injector issue of some kind.

hey thanks Damon I took off the breather and did not see any fuel spray then I tapped on gas tank sounded empty got 3gal of 93octane flipped the fuel switch and tried to crank finally seen fuel spray but no cranking. I took off the front driver side spark plug stuck a screwdriver in it and laid it close to some metal turned it over and had spark. I will try and make sure and check the firing order, and borrow a timing light and check timing then get a fuel pressure gauge. I also tried checking the (IAC) IDK if i did it wrong or not I think it needs o be replaced $50 off ebay. where do I check the fuel pressure on my 93 cavalier rs there was a special "t" made into the fuel line that looked like a valve stem you just screwed it on. and definitely will change the filter.

I hope the problem is simple, but remember one simple rule...
If the reason the car wont start is simple and cheap, (like a battery) the seller would fix it before trying to sell the car, and ALWAYS get that money back in the selling price. If they are trying to sell a car that's not running, then the problem is much more complicated.

yeah tell me about it but I guess a big part of it is my fault for being so impatient but I did talk him from 800 to 600 with $35 delivery 20 mi from his house on trailer and in May I want to buy a carb 350 for it anyway. I just wanted to try to get some miles out of the 305. thanxxxx man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

o.k. here's what i found out I need some weather stripping but that is the least of my worries It looks like someone went under the steering column and tried to bypass the vats and didn't know what they were doing so I gave the job of chasing down wires to a fiend of my father teh mechanic of for the family it will probably take and couple of weeks he's got some customers ahead of me I will post when I find out more

oohhh man this is a n old thread well I guess it's time for an update. the car is fine the prob was the CTS was telling the computer that it was -24*F and it was over gassing the plugs the car has plenty of power (for a 305). changed the plugs,wires,dist.cap,and rotor. changed the tranny got a low mileage one out of a trans am and adjusted the TV. found out that most of the wires that were cut went to fog lights. and found out that they hot wired the fuel pump. the only thing now is that I think that the catalytic conv. is no good and stopped up. Purrs like a kitten and plenty of power until it gets hot. I need an honest opinion. I want to build a 350 (Budget) a man gave me a set of (good) camel humps off of a corvette for it (with bracket holes) what do you guys think. this is the bottom end this is all I know about it I bought the block made like this:
Fresh 40 over 350 block 2 bolt main with arp main studs
Bored and honed with torque plate, decked
Brass freeze plugs with clevite cam bearings
Cast crank turned 10/10 with clevite main bearings
Rebuilt rods with arp wavelock bolts and clevite bearings
Speed Pro Hyperutectic flat top pistons with speed pro moly rings
Assembled with all clearances checked
