EGR intake passage clogged

I have a 1992 RS 305 stock TBI w/245,000 miles on it & it still runs great. The car has no miss, doesn't smoke, & doesn't lose any oil.

The problem is that my egr intake passage is clooged & i've tried repeatedly to clean it out with carb cleaner, & by trying to use stiff wire, but it feels as if i'm hitting a piece of steel about 2 inches into that small intake passage.

With the egr valve removed, the exhaust side spews out exhaust with no problem, but when i plug up the exhaust side & leave the intake side open, the car just runs & idles normally & there is no suction there.

I have to get the car inspected w/emission test in a few days & I know the nox will fail miserably because of this. When on the freeway i occassionally get the check engine lite (code 32), but it goes away a few minutes later.

Cans & cans of carb cleaner has no effect on the carbon that's clogging this up.

Does anyone know of any chemical that will clean the carbon out of that small egr intage passage? I would hate to go thru all of that work removing & re-installing the intake manifold just to clean out this one egr intake passage.

I don't know if it is the same on a camaro as a chevy truck but I blew mine through with compressed air... I know, I know, shouldn't blow stuff back in the engine but it's only carbon and mine didn't hurt a thing... HTH

Wow, that's really clogged. You already did what I would have suggested- fire the engine with the EGR removed. Usually the strong intake pulses will blow/suck it clear. But if you're that clogged then I'm with Eagle- compressed air. A little carbon will be quickly sucked through the motor and blown out the exhaust.

Beyond that, you're going to be removing the intake manifold and hot-tanking it.

Unless something really bad happened in your engine and something is stuck there, but you would have to notice that. Somethings wrong, it shouldn't be that hard...

that passage is by no means straight thru. it has a couple a bends in it. it would be really hard to stick a rod down there to clean it out without removing the intake.

Have you tried removing the tbi unit? The egr inlet to the intake side is just below the throttle blades, see if its clogged there.
