Questions?

I have a couple issues with my 1991 RS 305 V8 with TBI.
1)It has one fan and when I bought it the fan was wired to run when the key was on. Well not knowing this I thought it was running cold so I put a new 195 deg thermastat in it. No differance. I have since wired it rite but it still runs cold no where near the 195 degrees the thermostate says. Is this a problem? It seems like I have a 160 in it. But it does go to 195 befor it opens and then goes to 165 (the first line).
2)Since rewiring the fan the rite way I tested the fan and it doesn't come on till 220 and shuts off at arround 195. This isn't an issue with the weather being colder. The car runs at the first line which I figure is 160. It does heat up to 220 if it is idoling for 10 miniuts or so. It goes rite down when I drive it. Is this going to be a problem in the summer? Is there a way to program it to turn on any earlier or am I worrying for nothing?
3)my idel seems a little high. It is between 800 and 900 when it is hot and in gear. It goes to 1250 or so when I put it in netural. I am used to setting it at 750 in gear. This is a newer car then I am used to working on.
THANKS[/SIZE]

Your temp gauge most likely is not accurate. Hook up a scanner to the ALDL and see if the CTS (coolant temperature sensor - what the computer sees, different from what the gauge uses) is reading differently.

Stock fan on temp is more like 238 degrees, so that is consistent with your lower running gauge reading.

The other question is better addressed on the TBI forum (moving this there now).

Re: Questions?

i have a new 195 and according to the gauge it runs at 172 all the time. On occasion it will spike to 220 then come back down.

The RPM at idle depends on the day i guess. Sometimes mine will be around 700 other times 500. I've adjusted the timing to factory specs and that didn't help. Unless you're really freaked out about it, i wouldn't worry about it. I look at it this way. Our cars are 20 years old, they're gonna have quirks and a mind of their own sometimes.

Re: Questions?

These cars have a built-in high RPM mode for cold startups. It's best to wait for the RPM's to come down before you drive off- I've heard that repeated drops into drive during high idle can create excessive backlash in the differential (I had to look up why my rear tended to clunk upon takeoff). It's nothing to worry about, it just means that your ECM still functions properly
If you are looking to modify your car I believe this feature can be burnt out during PROM tuning or completely eliminated by installing EBL Flash

Re: Questions?

i think your car is seeing a cold temp and is keeping the idle up. your car is running the same temp as mine with a 180 therm. but mine will idle at 650 which it is programmed to do with the chip.
