91 RS Speed Limiter
Whats up guys? Last summer I changed gears in my rear end, from 273, to 373. After the swap my speedometer is pretty inaccurate. On the expressway I was passing, my speedo read 110 mph and I lost power until my speed decreased below 110. Do these cars have limiters? If so, how do I disable it. Thanks!

Re: 91 RS Speed Limiter
Yes, you are hitting the speed limiter. Best bet is to either find the correct VSS gears to correct it. Or get a SGI-5 box to correct it.
Could also disconnect the VSS input to the ECM, but you will also lose the TCC lockup. And likely end up with a SES light.
RBob.

Re: 91 RS Speed Limiter
If you just want to correct your speedo rbob is right on. If you want to disable the speed limiter go to tech articles and the sixth bullet under electrical has the fix. I have a 5speed so I know nothing about how it effects TCC.
I know your frustration. I went ftom 3.08 to 3.42 and it shuts down at like 98mph(actual). Yours is probably worse. On long runs my buddy's v6 04 stang outruns me. Blow his doors of in the 1/4.

Re: 91 RS Speed Limiter
Thanks so much for the info guys. Much appreciated! I will probably replace the speedo gears in the trans for now. Planning on a motor, so I'm sure I will run into this problem again in the future.

Re: 91 RS Speed Limiter
Changing the speedo gear will only correct the speedometer. To disable the speed limiter you will either have to have the chip reprogrammed to disable the limiter or you will have to spend the $5 on a couple pieces of wire & a toggle switch the temporarily disable the speed limiter when you "need" to. Toggle & wire is MUCH cheaper & easier than a chip reprogram.
