Overall best bang for your $$$$$

Finally over shortage on cash and problem after problem the 89' is finally in the shop. So after talking with the mechanic I decided to replace the engine with a new remans 305. I was quoted at 3,200 after parts and labor (block was 1800) this is at 97$ an hour. I decided why not 350, was my original Idea so I'm looking into these. I read a lot but I just cant understand the numbers and outputs these spec mean if that makes any sense.
Thanks,
Thomas

That's a crazy high labor rate, why don't you do the labor yourself ? A 350 tbi will not cost more maybe even less, you need larger injectors rockauto.com has them for around $100 and a new prom programed for a 350.

That's what I said but its a family mechanic who comes highly recommended. To quote him he said "But I wont charge you that much".
I figured I go there and have them sent to southbay to flow better. I was thinking just going with ebl or would I just be content with a prom.

With ca emissions I'm not sure what the laws are. Anything much more than stock cam specs without live tuning or a ebl may not pass. The heads on this engine suck but it would give you good low end torque and its reasonably priced. Going to a vortec engine rwould require external egr feed and a rather expensive tbi to vortec intake. I guess it comes down to your budget and emissions guidelines.

Thank you for the links. Well we have a family owned smog shop so not a big deal but I would like to keep mpg but have enough mfff. I wouldn't like to sound like v8 305 cough cough and not be able to deliver. Strictly not meant for racing!
