affordable performance upgrades for TBI
affordable performance upgrades for TBI
Hi everyone I'm new to this board and I think it is great. I have just purchased an 89 camaro with a 305 TBI engine and can't wait to get to work. I'm on a tight budget after just buying the car. I was wondering if you guys could give my some ideas on improving the performance while I save money to afford some major upgrades. My car is all stock right now so any help you could

Hey, welcome to the world of 3rd generation F bodies! Let's see, well for starters you can do all of the Ultimate TBI mods in the Technical articals section of this site (most of these are "free" mods). This will help get that throttle body flowing better so you can really make some hp down the road with more expensive mods. I will tell you right now, The open element air filter is one of the best mods you can do right off and will only set you back about $35 with a conventional element. Even without a K&N or Holley Powershot element they flow soooooo much better than stock. Removing your smog pump is also a good beginner mod to do. It only frees up 1-3hp, but drops about 13lbs of weight and makes a lot of stuff more accesable under the hood. Granted, you may have to re-install it come inspection time if your state (can't remember what it was) has a visual inspection, but it only takes about 30min. to take out or put back in. You could gut your CAT, again, depending on if you have to pass emmissions. Once you have about $300 accumulated a performance chip, cat back exhaust, or headers is always a good bet. If your engine is high mileage the best things to do are mods that will swap to a 350ci crate engine later, but that's getting ahead of the game.
Oh yeah, if you need any help, feel free to email me hanester@vt.edu or AOL IM chat HarryEcho3

By far it's the easiest mod to do that will give you a fairly good return on your investment.

Go through all of the posts for the last year. Read everything you can whether or not you think it's applicable because you never can tell WHAT is applicable. You'll find a whole bunch of answers to your question. If you do some homework on your own you'll find people are much more willing to help out because it shows you're serious. Serious enough to do some research. Welcome to the boards.

You can check out Pablo's guide to the "Ultimate TBI Mods" here on Third Gen. But if you want a quick gain right off the bat, just get a Dynomax cat-back or something of the like. Under $150 and you'll feel and hear the difference.
