Speedometer or cable?

Hey guys, so the speedometer cable were frayed at the T5 transmission. It was a two piece cable but the cable was siezed together at the connection so i had to replace the entire thing. However i went with the one piece 80" cable instead (cost effective), it says it would work and its for the car... Installed it no problem at the transmission but had a little problem at the speedometer, problem is the clip but i got it in... it doesnt sit flush but maybe half an inch back but the clip has it secured.

What is does: As soon as i start moving the speedoter jumps around... pretty high like 30-40mph and im going 5-8mph tops. Could it be the speedometer itself or is it the new cable... or could it possibly be something else like in the transmission?

Re: Speedometer or cable?

"Could be" anywhere in the speedo system; although my first guess is that the cable is either improperly lubed, or the speedo head has it's own problems. As a rule, if it was the drive/driven gears in the trans, the speedo reads low, not high.

Worth making sure the cable/sheath has no tight bends.

How does the "new" cable/sheath differ from the original? Photos? If it's not fitting properly, that might cause problems, too.

I've got three speedo heads for my motorcycle--the original and two eBay replacements--and they're all jumpy. One of these days, I'll have to actually send it to someone who specializes in speedo repair. Come to think of it, I had a Honda Civic with a jumpy speedo head. I sent it in, and they told me it was too far gone to save. Had to get a replacement.

Re: Speedometer or cable?

@Schurkey So someone else gave me some tips. He told me to disconnect both ends of the cable and see if it turns freely and it does turn with ZERO resistance. I lubed it up a bit a reseated it in the transmission and it seems to go in smoother but more importantly it just slid right into the cluster with no problems whatsoever and sits flush so it must not have been in the transmission all the way before.

The issue is similar but different and i believe there is progress. Now when i start out its at 0mph and when i start moving it goes up fast still but alot smoother, but if im going 5 it still goes up to 25-30 and when im going 30 the needle is off the charts over 100mph. So i dont understand what the problem is still.

I did a bench test using a drill and it seems as if the speedometer is working. Could it be the gear in the transmission?

Re: Speedometer or cable?

In the video, im under the car and ive disconnected the speedo cable from the T5 and attached it to my drill to check if the speedometer is working while installed. To me it seems to be working as it should i can be wrong im not sure??? What are your thoughts?

Re: Speedometer or cable?

I don't see a video.

You're saying the speedo works smoothly when the cable is turned by a drill, but reads wildly fast when the cable is driven by the speedo gears? I guess then it has to be the speedo gears...but I'd have blamed the speedo head if you hadn't said it worked right with the drill.
