Max lift/Duration

I have been researching cams, correct me if I'm wrong. Is the objective to get the max lift/duration your engine can handle, but keep a lobe seperation between @110-118 to keep the idle smoth and keep vaccum? I am trying to figure out how to choose cams. If anyone knows of a good artice that explains cams, let me know. I read the camshaft article in the "Tech Articles" section of this site and that explained lobe seperation.
Thanks, Matt

go to COMPCAMS.com they have a nice explanation area. Real nice.

THe key is to match lift/duration/lobe sep/lifter type to your engine combo and expected driving conditions.
