LO3 Bad Computer/ Computer swap

I have a 88 camaro with a LO3. I think the computer might be bad. Is there a way to test it? I'd like to know before I spend the money on a new one. How much does a new one cost?

Also is it possible or adviseable to switch to an 89 on computer the LO3 was first introduced in 88 and most computer related parts are for 89 up and not available for the 88. Does any one know why?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

In 1988 the L03/L05 cars got the 8063 ECU. The 8063 was only used in '88. Since there are so few 8063 equipped cars in existance (compared to the '89-up) alot of companies didn't consider it to be profitable to develop products for it. Tunercat, however, has just released the definition file for the 8063 if you want to get into chip programming. The 7747 and the 8746 ECUs are both direct replacements.

Advance Auto (the other auto parts stores too, probably) will provide you with a remanufactured unit for less than $100 (core exchange required). Junk yards usually have used ones for $40-$60. Brand new ones from GM are >$200 (core exchange required).

Thanks I had just thought my computer was bad and then that afternoon I was out for a drive and the computer took a **** on me. Luckly I was able to coast into a frinds drive way.

The computer for my car is $79 with a $70 core exchange. unfortunatly It wasn't in stock so I'm a pedestian for a coulpe of days.
