What did you decide to do for a cam?

First let me thank you all for your input. It gave me some food for thoughts during the past weeks.

I am going with the Crane 2031. My decision was based on the fact that the 2031 has sufficient lift (I/E .438/.452) without being too much for my engine thus affecting idle and torque. The lift#s are close to the "ideal" lift for a 305 (.460) without exceeding it like the comp cam does. Also the duration numbers should be O.K. for a 305 (I/E @ .050 lift 208/214 which is relatively mild, I think). After what I have read about duration numbers on this board, this cam should work fine.
And there is Nitroburn (thanks to you), who told me extensivly about his good experiences with this cam on his car. Nitro has an autotrans and his engine runs fine with the 2031. So it should run fine on my car with a T5, too.

As for the concerns of over/undercamming my engine: The power band for this cam is 1500 - 5000.
I watched my driving habits during the past weeks. In city traffic, I rev my my engine between 1500 and 2500 rpm, sometimes 3000. On the autobahn (interstate) I am usually travelling between 80 and 100 mph. This means an rpm range up to 2500 - 2600.
So the cam's power band should be fine for me during normal driving.
Plus there is a lot of potential for revving the engine up to the 5000 - 5500 rpm range when I have to or want to do so when I want to go quicker/faster than usual. This is exactly what I have desired.
There are still other factors that took some influence: According to Nitroburn, the mileage doesn't suffer that bad, he still gets up to 23 mpg which is fine.
If necessary, I can convert my FPR into an AFPR or get the vAFPR which is an esay to do mod.
I have winaldl and can check the engine's condition under all operating conditions.
So, if necessary, I can burn my own chips and tailor the specs to the engine's needs.

If you are interested, I will keep you posted about the cam swap and the results. But don't be too impatient, it will take some weeks or even months until I get this all finished. First of all, I have to order the cam, springs, timing chain, etc. Getting the parts to Germany will take at least 3 or 4 weeks.

I am not in a hurry, though. So expect this all finished during the summer months.

Thanks for your interest.

Later

Andreas
