I would say pull every plug wire and check the condition of them, I've had 3 burn before and all similar problems to yours except stalling. If you have headers the chance of them being burnt will be worse.
I'd say also replace your fuel filter, they're not expensive.

Try what mark mentioned and adjust your A/F screws with a vacuum guage. Adjust them so that you get the highest possible amount (inches) of vacuum possible. If you can't get ahold of one, try getting one from autozone (they will lend them out free). Then adjust your idle speed. Also check timing and make sure its around 6 degrees BTDC. That will be a good start. You could also have fouled plugs so check these as well. Clean them with gasoline and a wire brush. Then regap them to .045.
are the A/F screws the screws on the front of the carb. also i know nothing about timing and carbs could you explane how to do that stuff.
Thanks,
Dustin

Yes the A/F are on the front.

the Air fuel screws (or idle mixture screws) are on the front of the carb in front of the primaries. This will adjust the primaries air fuel ratio. If you can not get ahold of a vacuum gauge then turn the screws all the way in and turn them back out 2 1/2 turns. Then start the car. If it will hold an idle then turns the screws in until the engine starts idling really rough. Then turn them back out until the engine starts running smoothly. And whala. Just make sure to turn both screws the same amount.
As for timing you will need a timing light unless you know how to time it by ear like I do. I'll guess you want to do it by a light. First you'll need to acquire a timing light and then make sure you're balancer is marked and has a degree tab. Then make sure the light has a power source and put the "clip" over the number one cylinders plug wire. Start the car. Point the light at the harmonic balancer. This is the big black cylinder like thing behind the crank pully. Watch for what reading you get. You'll want it to be around 6 degree BTDC. (this means that the light should be blinking above the 0 on the tab) To adjust the timing simply loosen the distributor hold down and turn the distributor either clockwise to retard the timing or counterclockwise to advance it. Only turn it very slightly and read how much it has changed with the light.
Good luck.
