Why do we do it????

Why do we do it????

I just bought my '89 IROC a month ago. When I got it, it did not pass emissions. It was smoking more than a homeless man with a free carton of cigarettes and a bag of pot and the steering was whipped. I got it for $2000.00. Within the last month, I have installed a brand new L03, got all the brakes, pads, rotors, shoes, drums replaced and also replaced 6 billion other little things. Then of course, I was almost stranded twice from a defective starter that only worked when it wanted to so I replaced that. Then to get it to pass emissions, I had to replace the EGR twice (first one was defective) and also a catalytic converter. Now when I go over 70MPH on the highway, it sounds like an old clothes dryer with a bad belt and vibrates like it is running on a stone driveway. I imagine this will end up being a bearing somewhere of a warped axle or driveshaft. Some people may just give in, so why don't we? Well, we love our third gens! At least I do. The question will always be, "When does it end"? I guess the answer is that it never will, and maybe that is why it is so much fun!

So, where is the best place to get an aluminum driveshaft for an '89 Iroc with the L03 and 700 Auto?

Thanks! I figured if I, or someone else is going to tear down the rear-end, might as well swap out the driveshaft as well. My theory (and everyone elses) is to never just replace defective parts, but upgrade them when they die. Have a great weekend ya'll. Be back Monday.

firstly i second the tires being inbalanced and secondly we do it for the pride. but for me it seems to be pride of a f-ing pile of horse manure that will never ever run right and will always give me problems. i mainly do it for the bonding experience with my pa. he loves cars and i do to so we do it together.

I'm 23 years old . I bought my car when I was 16 with my own money . I still drive the same car .Almost every single part under the hood has been replaced !!! I still live at home , I go to college , last month my parents said " please let us buy you another car " I said " I can't get rid of it . The car still looks like new .Wish I could post some pics ! Well , now Im a junior in college , but looks like I still have 2 or 2 and 1/2 more years left because Im changing my major! .This car will be my daily driver for another 2 and 1/2 years ! Every once in awhile I'll pull up somewhere and I'll get "Hey you wanna sell that car ? " ..."No" ..lol ....I'll always have it . When I get out of school I want to get an Iroc to start on , but I'll still have my V6 RS to !!!

It was completly stock when I was 16 , except the loud annoying flowmaster , which I thought was so cool at the time ! NOT !!! not on a V6 ...Look at my sig now what its become . May not be much , but you'd be surprised , its pretty quick for a V6 !

My 87 Camaro belonged to a friend and sat here for 5 years with dead engine. next to it sat my daughters boyfrends 81 TA with dead engine. Being more familar with the Pontiac 400 I get the idea to do a simple rebuild on the Poncho and stick it in the Chevy. You can guess where this went. Engine still sitting in living room with $5K in parts so far and a lot to do to it still. Car is gutted and on jack stands getting ready for full ladder frame back half to narrowed Ford 9. Still fooling myself thinking I can put plates on it.

I don't know why you guys have so much trouble. I had an 83 camaro with the std 2.8 and never had any problem with it. I bought an 84 Z28 with a 305 that had 142K when i bought it. I beat the snot out of it and it is still going with over 160K and still no problems. I recently got rid of the z because the body and interior were messed up. But I bought an 85 sport coupe with the MPFI 2.8 and it has over 200K and the only problem is a tranny slip. The car is in decent shape inside and out and is going to get a 400 with a turbo 350 transplant. I have done a bit of minor work to each, but I have not had the problems it sounds like you guys are having. Maybe buy a car that was more well kept or something. These cars WONT DIE. How do you kill them???

Hahaha..you sound like me and my husband. At least we aren't the only ones with car parts all over the house!

But for my answer...we do it for the love of the car. I bought my 87 Iroc for 500, I could have easily made money off that car if I would have parted it. The only thing wrong with it was a busted tranny. We put a $300 used one out of a totaled one and she has ran fine ever since. I have been driving her for 1 1/2 years and all we have done (besides routine crap like oil, tires, etc) was replace the heater core and the intake gasket. I don't think that is too shabby.

We also have a 78 TA that would have made a perfect parts car..not because it wasn't worth saving, but because we paid 700 for it and all the parts for it were there, but already tore out. It would have been easier to just sell it all off...but now we are fixing it up.

The 90 Formy is a whole other subject. She breaks everytime we turn around. But I personally (I don't think my hubby agrees) think that she breaks all the time because she is soo modded out she is fragile.

So, it is the love of the cars that makes us do it.
