putting a 350 5 speed in my car?
putting a 350 5 speed in my car?
I have an 86 camaro. It originally came with a 305 700r4.Anyway The tranny sucked bad and acted it like it had no second gear. And the motor kept overheating and I couldn't figure out why till I pulled the motor and found a giant crack in the block.
Anway I was at the boneyard the other day.And I found an 86 z-28 with a 350 and a 5 speed. The guy said he would sell me the motor and tranny with the crossmember and all the clutch peddles and everything to change it over for 800 bucks.
Are the t-5's strong enough to stand up to a well built small block?I plan on using 10.5 inch slicks so the tranny needs to be strong.I originally planned on using a th350.But I drive an auto everyday and this is just a play car so I prefer a stick.
How hard would it be to do this swap and is this tranny strong enough?

make sure that 350 is really a 350. 350s never came with t5s from the factory so it could be a swap or it's a 305 and the guy's trying to rip you off. i'd find some casting numbers. if it is a 350 then that tranny might already be on its way out. some people have had good luck with the T5 behind a built 350, it's largely how you drive. my world class T5 is still holding up but I've only had it in for a couple months and my carb's out of tune so my engine isn't putting max power. i'll be swapping to a t56 this summer.

My T-5 puked behind a 305 L69. I've heard others defend them but I think they're crap. They DEFINATELY can't stand up to the torque of a 350. That's why GM didn't even offer the 350's with manual tranny's. Only auto's. Agree with post above. Make SURE it's a 350, and if it is get a T56 or better yet a Tremec.
The motor is a 350.It is an older one.Like out of an truck or something.
I am not going to do it.For 800 bucks I could almost have a nice 350 short block built. So I am going to do that and buy a th350 from summit and have a transgo shift kit put in it.
I have still not decided wether or not I am going to make this a street and strip car or just strip. It would be much easier to go just strip. But I want to be able to drive it to.WHy build something U cannot enjoy. So I am not sure yet.I know it sure complicates everything.
