Dual Fan temp ?'s....

Hey,
What are the start temp's for the dual fan setups on the 91-92 L98's?

It seems as though my car is getting pretty darn hot in traffic....

Thanks!

I don't think they cut on till about 220* stock. Something I would definately change.

How do I go about changing the start temps? As well as the thermostat....

Are the temps controlled by the ECM or an external sensor?

BTW, anyone got the exact temps?

I would go with a 180* stat, it's located on the front of the intake manifold. You'll see the upper radiator hose leading to it.

The stock fan switch kicks it on about 237, I've heard. The switch is located in the pass head, between #6 and #8 plugs. Change it to a 200 on / 180 off, and you should be fine. The other fan is controlled by the a/c pressure. Replacing that switch is all I've done, and all works well, never goes over 200/210. You can get the switch from Jegs or Summit, about 45-50 bux.

if I'm not mistaken the computer controls the turn on temps on the tbi and tpi. and the swicth is there kinda for a back up. which in turn but putting in a lower temp switch triggers it to turn on sooner. if you are thinking about prom burning dno't spend the money on the switch.

I dont really have the equipment for prom burning, so a switch will be the way to go...

Any recommendations on parts?

On my stock 90 L98 TPI chip Fan 1 enables at 108C (226.4F) and shuts off at 105C (221F). Fan 2 is disabled in the ECM, but is controlled by a pressure switch on the A/C according to schematics.

Fan swithches

In the dual fan set-up, one fan is controleld by the computer and the other is controlled by a fan switch. I'm working on the same probs right now. As a quick soln, thunderracing sells Hypertech cool fan switches (on at 200 and off at 180) for $40. I have no clue about the difficulty of installation though. I don't think its too bad.

I just installed a 180 t-stat. My temp reads are pretty consistant, but I am still running at 220+ in traffic. Its hot in Texas!

Its easy to replace. Just start by unclamping and removing any hoses in your way. Then remove the hose attachments to the TPI unit. Then remove the 4 bolts holding the TPI in place and just push it aside (I left the linkages attached still). Then you should see a U-hose righ infonr of the t-stat housing. Pull it off and replace it if you need to.

When u replace the stat, make sure that you clean both surfaces (butter knife or blade), lay the t-stat in FIRST and lay the gasket(sticky side down) on top of it. Then replace everything else.

If that does not solve your prob, (after t-stat and cool fan switch) its time for a hi-flow aluminum water pump (avail. from Edelbrock website). These H2O pumps will drop your coolant temp by 20 degrees. Thats the permanent long-term soln.

Good luck
