Can I lose the EGR ??

I hear people talking about how they took off the EGR and blocked off the openings. What does this all effect and will it help performance? If so what else do I have to do other than just taking it off and blocking the hole ???

As a note, Im not really worried about emissions. Don't ask.

If you take it off and block the hole, you'll get a constant SES light and your engine may tend to knock.

But that didn't stop me. I edited the chip to make up for both of these things.

ok, I can edit my chip too as soon as I get going on the chip burning (soon).

But I guess my real question is, what do you gain from doing this? any HP, air flow, ..... I just want to know what the reasoning behind it would be?

I think any gain would be so small it's not worth it. It lets more clean intake charge into the cylinder, but it also raises combustion temperature. As a result, you have to set your timing (compression ratio, etc whatever) down so you don't knock.

The reason I disabled mine is because it was stuck open and I didn't have the 80 or so bucks to replace it. I shot it with 125 PSI from my compressor and unplugged it.

PK87,

Removing the EGR (or abandoning it in place) on a stock manifold doesn't improve anything, and may actually decrease your performance. Check out GM Tech's article at www.sethirdgen.org for the details.

There is no improvement in air flow, since you don't change the intact passages at all. And beyond the annoying little yellow "friend" that will constantly stare at you from the dash, the heads will tend to run hotter and cause preignition and timing retard, meaning lower power and lower fuel economy.
