Can anyone explain this please

When I get stuck in traffic and it heats up to 220 degrees she starts missing, fuel pressure gauge jumps erratically until it knocks off. When you turn the key you have nothing. After it cools down starts right up & idles perfect. My mechanic is thinkin' vapor lock what do you guys think.trying to get this car ready for the Ohio gathering.thanks

BTW this is also posted on the TPI board.

Heat soak at the starter.......takes ALOT of heat to cause vaporlock....how close are your fuel lines to the exhaust Manifold/headers...could be your ignition mudual also..or a fusible link....I think its more of an electrical/ignition problem...thats where I would start.

What you are describing really sounds like an electrical problem to me...have you checked all the grounds from the motor to the firewall and such...are all the starter wires tight and clean. Do any of your other gauges react also? has this been a problem, or just since the weather warmed up? Did you have problems last summer?

I dont think vaporlock would keep the starter from working.

I once thought I was getting a vapor lock on my TPI motor. That was until it was explained it is virtually impossible to get vapor lock with 40+ lbs of pressure in the fuel line! 6lbs on a carb, yeah, possible. 40+, nah.

Thats what I was thinking also. Other than trouble-shooting the ignition and checking for dirty loose connections on the starting system, I dont know what to tell ya. Maaybe we can get some help from the trouble-shooting experts?
I dont think 220* is enough heat to stall the motor and lock things up. When my car was stalling and not starting until cooldown, I changed the spark control modual, and the pickup coil, this solved it for me. But, If I'm reading this right, your starter isnt working after you stall, I read of some guys buying the aftermarket Mini-starter, to solve heat soak issues. Keep us posted, and good luck.

I had this problem last yr and we thought it was the fuel pump since we had just changed it out.Ended up redoing it 4 or 5 times cause everytime I got stuck in traffic it would do it again.Haven't got stuck in traffic till this fri & two weeks before so thought problem was solved.Guess not.Guess I'll start changing parts till it doesn't do it.Ignition module then look at the AFPR itself. Thanks guys keep them coming.

Could it have anything to do with the fan(s) turning on? A gremlin in the wiring harness robbing the juice for the fuel pump when the second fan turns on?

Maybe someone else can help you find out if this is it, I'm only guessing.

Good luck

It could, uaually a clogged cat will show up at all times with a big loss of power...and lack of rpm"s. Just look under the car at night with a warmed up engine, and see if the cat is glowing....

actually we are gonna do a pressure test across the cat to see if it's clogged either later 2day or early 2morrow.Will report back what we found.
