Adjusting power steering pump pulley?
Adjusting power steering pump pulley?
Hi-
How do you adjust the power steering pump belt on a '84 T/A (stock 305 engine)? According to the shop manual, there's 2 bolts behind the pump pulley that you have to loosen, then using a lever between the bracket and the pump shaft housing you adjust the tension and tighten down the bolts....
However my setup doesn't match that in the book- facing the engine, I've got a bolt at the upper left that the pump bracket pivots on, then a bolt on the left going thru a slot in the bracket into the water pump. Then there's a third bolt on the right side (accessed from the back) that runs thru a slot in what looks to be a seperate back half of the pump bracket (possibly part of the A/C bracket) and threads into the the pump bracket itself (and when I say 'pump bracket' I refer to the bracket that's apparently bolted to the pump body itself).
However when I loosen these three bolts, the pump is still stuck fast, and for the life of me I can't find any other bolt(s) that would be part of the adjustment. Can someone tell me where I can find this missing bolt - or have pics as to it's location?
Thanks!

That description seems to match my setup, and it sounds like you've got the correct ones loosened. (the bolt it pivots on goes into the cylinder head, the one below it with the horizontal slot is on the water pump, and the third one comes from behind the bracket on the right side.) I would suggest tapping on the bracket (not the resovoir tank) in the direction that would loosen the belt and see if it breaks free.

Thats the setup i have on my 82 Z-28 I would loosen all of the bolts and use a big lever and just pull. When you get the belt tight just tighten the bolts and your done. I did this after i intalled headers and it works.

Also just look which bolts are holding it in and undo all except the bottom one, so you can have a pivot point.
bolts
The problem is....there are 4 bolts. The pivot bolts to the head, another one goes into the water pump casting, theres another one on the backside under the a/c compressor, and another one further in toward the motor just in front of the exhaust manifold. You can't see it, you have to feel it.If you look from the front just above the power steering pump pulley you can see the slot in the bracket on the backside.Trust me, its there.I just did this yesterday.
