rearend gears and posi recommendations
<NOTICE!!> DON'T FLAME ME IF I STATE SOMETHING INCORRECTLY, I HAVE NO KNWLEDGE OF CAR TERMS
</NOTICE!!>
I am thinking of getting my car souped up a bit over the summer, and I am thinking of a new cam, a new rearend and gears.
If I were to get a mid-size cam to fit my 92 rs with 305 tbi and auto tranny, what size cam would I need? I have stock peanut cam in it, and stock gears. which I'm not sure what ratio they are?
What would be the best way to get more power to my rearend?
New gears and rearend? new gears? I'm not sure what I need.
Please give me suggestions with brands, and sizes of what I need
Thanks all, and if at all possible, be exact with no abbreviations.
I need this all in 'layman's' terms.
Thanks again
The only mods I have are:
14" Edelbrock O.E
ascd ss hood
roh snypers (on the way)
3" exhaust with ansa tips
High Performance waterpump

Go to the junkyards and scope out a 3.42 rearend out of just about ANY V6 mid 80's camaro..........you should be able to get the rear for around $120, then you can swap it straight into your RS, and thats about the cheapest way to get gears that I know of. Lay off on the posi for now, you really don't need it that badly with an L03 305 except for maybe at the track or stoplight races from a DEAD stop. When you do feel like you need a posi, buy one of those SLP units that they sell real cheap online (supposedly). As for a cam.........to match with your 3.42 gears I would go with a Competition Cams Extreme Energy 262 flat tappet simply because its cheap and its a proven performer in a 305 with good gears and exhaust. If you wanted to stay with a roller cam I would go with a TPIS cam.....though I hear they are top dollar.

The most important thing to remember is to match the power band of your cam to your gears.
Say you're cam doesn't produce power past 4500 rpms, then 3:42s would be your best bet. These are the best all around gears for performance/highway drivability.
If you want 3:73s, then make sure you get a cam and intake that will breathe a little past 5k rpms.
I'm very happy with my Richmond Gears.

3.73's would be fine if you were wanting an all out 0-70MPH car and would work "fine" with a stock lo3. They do tend to leave the car breathless at higher rpms but if you were to run just in D and let the governer shift for you there wont be any problems especially with 15 or 16in rims. Dont try it with 14's.
Like mentioned dont worry about a posi unit until you need one but thier all fairly easy to install. Mark hit it though, 3.42's are the best all around gears.

I'm only going to do this once, so I need to clarify a few more things fellas..
Would a better gain be seen from an lt1 cam and 3.73's ?
or
for a 3.42 with the Competition Cams Extreme Energy 262 flat tappet cam?
Keep in mind that I will drive this car daily, and I only race occasionally.
I found a local mechanic who is awesome at this ****, and he said he would swap the cam for a good price.
What else should I buy for the cam swap?
Thanks/.

What do you guys think of 3:23 on my car? I am going to get some for a really good deal brand new. How much might I see with performance?

Buy a roller cam if your engine already has one. I'm sure Comp offers the XE262 in roller form. You can even go a little more radical without any negative effects with a roller cam but for 305 the XE 262 is about the limit.
a few last things I need to know before I get the new cam.
If I don't swap my rearend at the same time as I swap my cam, will this hurt my current rearend?
And also, does this cam hurt the transmission (700r4) from just regular driving?
And when I swap the cam, do I need to swap anything else with it (besides lifters), to stop it from breaking anything else in my car?
Just fill me in again fellas with any potential problems..
Thanks,
Terry
